If I take the SAT would I be required to take the subject tests too? Would it be a significant advantage? I'm applying to UW Madison, UMNTC, UMichigan, UPENN, NYU Stern and Colgate. I'm worried since December is close to the very last date and I can't take a subject test and the SAT I on that date. The SAT seems MUCH easier for me but the subject tests would be more of pain. If I sent in my ACT scores would they be a replacement?

When you register for the SAT, you don’t have to register for the subject tests at the same time.

However, some colleges require that you take the subject tests as part of their admissions process; you will have to check with those schools individually to see if they do, and which subject tests they require.

Most colleges, except for some of the ones on the West Coast, will take both SAT and ACT scores with little to no preference for either one; in that case, if you only have December as the last date left to take SATs and you need to fulfill any requirements for subject tests (remember you can take up to three on one day), then take the subject tests instead of the regular SAT.

If those schools do not require subject tests, well, subject test scores can still be helpful if you can do well in the subjects you enjoy. If you feel like your ACT score is a little low and you might do better on the SAT, you can do that too.

Just make sure you take all the required tests. So yes, ACT can be a replacement for the SAT.

Well I want to take the SAT but not the subjects tests. On the collegeboard site it says I cant take the SAT and the subject tests on the same day, which is Dec7th.

That’s fine. You can just register for the SAT by itself. When you sign up for it, Collegeboard will not prompt you to register for the subject tests.

So for Penn you either have to submit the SAT plus two subject tests, OR the ACT with writing. You can tell this for Penn (and every other college on your list) by looking at the admissions website. Are you unhappy with your ACT score? Because every college on your list will accept that. If it is good, you may not need to do any more testing at all.

GRRR!! Now I HAVE to study for SAT II as well. My ACT scores are not where I want them to be. I also like how the SAT is WAY more consistent in difficulty than the act, oh one more thing. No science portion :)

It often depends and the school and on the major. Look up each school for your major to see their recommendations.
