you guys know my stats (and for the ssats, i think i got in the 90's overall.. except for the math... which, was very easy for my but i didn't do any work because it was so easy.. i just whipped through it without reviewing.. on one practice test i took, i got 25/25 on the 2nd math section and 13/25 on the first because it was so easy i didn't think much.. so.. its sort of a problem for me.. so expect minimum math to be 37... minimum minimum minimum.. but i think i might have gotten 46/49..and for reading, prob mid 80's and verbal high 90's.. but 90's overall i think)

schools:
andover

st pauls
st georges
milton
tabor
hotchkiss
choate

could tabor be considered a safety for me? am i a shoo-in there (note: cousin also went there)?

do i need a school like northfield mount hermon? is it really unlikely that i won't get in any of the above schools (8 total)?

lol, blairt that sounds enough to me. remember its not cheap either, the app fees, it tends to add up very quickly.

yes, tabor i think could be considered a safety. maybe st. georges too but then again idont think i know very much about it. lol stop worrying, just send them in, and give urself a much needed break. RELAX! ;)

If my memory serves me correctly, you are applying as an 11th grader, right?
It's tough to get into the top tier schools as an 11th grader, especially if there's no hook. I don't think your ECs are particularly outstanding. I could be wrong but IMHO:

Andover very high reach
Exeter very high reach
St pauls very high reach
St georges maybe
Milton very high reach
Tabor maybe
Hotchkiss very high reach
Choate very high reach

hmm, well as much as id like to say yes, "100%" we all know very well that its very hard to be 100% sure. but of course, when u get down to it, boarding schools still have a 'bottom line', theyll still need to fill in their beds, so yes, you are definitely (almost) guaranteed to get into at least one. ^_^

i have a great art portfolio. that's my hook. OHHh and 400-500 hours of community service. and self-study philosophy, advanced english, poetry, anthropology, psychology (with proof of study for all).. and more self-study academics.

4.0 and going onto next year academics because i have completed everything

went to nationals for comepetitive cheerleading
was on xcountry team for 6-8 grades when i was in 4th grade
presidential physical fitness award
basketball travel team

EC's are my strongest part (and academics)
i have a VERY good art portfolio (photography)

ive never had a strong background in composition, so ive had discovered problems w/ taht in film and stuff. its a little too tho, w/ the whole motion aspect and everything.

Disagree that ECs are strong, especially if a 10th grader has to mention something they did as a 4th grader. The hook needs to be stronger for an 11th grader than a 9th grader.

i mentioned that i did that as a 4th grader because i'm not on a current team (school doesnt have one) and so i want to manifest my dedication (6 years)

400-500 hours of community service w/ frequent trips to south america and mexico
25 blue ribbons in horseback riding, 6? red ribbons, 1 white ribbon
captain of competitive cheer team, 2nd best in country
excelled at every sport (soccer, softball, basketball, swim team, xcountry, track)
presidential physical fitness award
photograohy portfolio.... very strong
digital and graphic art
drawing and watercolor painting
bass guitar (will send cd)... very strong
numerous essay contests
poetic genius society, mensa, independent thinkers of ventura (i attend regularly, so its like a club)
work experience (lots of babysitting-often for free, yoga teacher)
self-stud yadvanced academics (philosophy, psychology, poetry and creative writing, literature and composition, anthropology, advanced biology)
i know theres more i can't think right now!

MY HOOK IS PHOTOGRAPHY. it is much stronger than any 9th grader, let alone 8th grader, and it easily compares to current students at the schools i'm applying (st pauls is like, RIGHT on my level and andover is actually, suprisingly, a bit below from what i saw in their student gallery.. and i know of some very artsy kids w/ okay academics get in as new 11th graders.. they ddin't seem amazing, but they were artsy, so idk..)

lawrenceville is definitely not middle tier
it is not that far behind from the biggies in terms of SSAT averages
Exeter 94, Andover 93, Choate 91, Deerfield 92, SPS 88 (surprised) and Hotchkiss 92...while lawrenceville also has a whooping 88percentile which is definitely on the high end of all boarding schools...it has low acceptance rate, not as low as the previous 6 but still very low

as for the OP, i think you better have safety..all of your schools are reach schools...unless you have any national or international award, I wont go as far to say that art is your hook..at hotchkiss, we had 2 kids who won INTERNATIONAL art award and both of their work was exhibited in galleries around the world..last year, there was also a girl who perform REGULARLY at carnegie hall (violin)....not to discourage u..but this is the calibre of student you see at BS, so no offense, most people felt they were the gifted special kid before coming to a BS like hotchkiss, but they realize that they are just the average kid here...or maybe even struggling

I agree with the poster above
Andover very high reach
Exeter very high reach
St pauls very high reach
St georges high match
Milton high reach
Tabor match
Hotchkiss very high reach
Choate very high reach

Membership in Mensa is based on having an iq in the top 2%. Test indices can vary by test, so the entry point will depend on the test. I think it might be 130-132 on a standard test like the WISC II -- around 2 standard deviations from the norm (100).

blairt -- I think what bearcats and Loophole are saying has some truth. If you have your heart set on boarding school, it would be better to add one or two more like Tabor. Most of the schools you are applying to are reaches for almost everyone. I know that is hard to understand when you used to being on the top.

Understand that I am not an expert on this. I think you will most likely get into Tabor, especially with your family connection -- but it is not a certainty. If your heart is set on boarding school, then add at least one more that offers you a great chance of admission. Be sure you love any school to which you apply.

see, that's the thing.. i really like tabor. i don't even see it as a "safety" school. i love the sailing, having my favorite aunt and uncle live so close by.. already knowing my classmates through my cousin.. being a junior while my other cousin is a freshmen and then being a senior while having 2 cousins as freshmen and sophomores.. i like the kids who go there; i think they're really laid back.. i've actually considered going there instead of the other top schools (if, say, i was admitted everywhere) because i would have the chance to be at the top there but still have the opportunity to take 21 AP courses... all while being very close to my favorite cousins.

i haven't been able to find anywhere else that i love as much as tabor.

tabor's acceptance rate is about 50% for most of the school
my cousin got in and she's not an amazing student at all (though she went to st georges to pump up her resume for the summer).. she was a straight b student and did plays and sailed recreationally...
