Well considering that the Ustore sells them for a good price, I think I can get it anytime I feel that I really need one.

Have you started dorm-shopping yet? I haven't bought a single thing!

Have you started dorm-shopping yet? I haven't bought a single thing!

I went up to Princeton the other day with my sister, and used her prox to get into my dorm building. My dorm room happened to be unlocked, so I got to get an early look at my room. I found out I had hardwood floors, so I went and bought an area rug. I also bought bedding. So that is the only dorm shopping I've done so far.

Hah, well, Aram, I can certainly keep the Wilson buildings straight, seeing as how I live there, but the Butler dorms are another story. The only one I know for sure is Lourie-Love.

I would just like to post again strongly urging people not to bring a printer or at least to wait and see. I think you'll be surprised by how little you'll find yourselves wishing you had one; my roommate had a printer and he used it maybe once the entire school year.

well, wait and see. for me, the benefit of the printer/scanner far out weighed the costs.

its not big at all, it barely takes up half of half of the width of the top shelf on my book shelves.

thats the printer i got! Although i recommend that you do not buy it through Princeton, as it is probably much cheaper at your local tech store. I bought it at Brandsmart (Bestbuy type here in South Florida) for $70 .

--David--

That's not a laser printer though is it? I don't think I'll really need color...and don't you have to replace inkjet ink cartriges more often?
I saw some laser printer/scanner/copiers at Circuit City for about $100

But yea, I'll probably wait...I mean, I went through high school without a printer in my room (I printed all my stuff at school) so I'll survive

You can definitely go either way. I like having the printer because it does color, and every once in a while for a really complicated Excel graph, it's nice to have. I still use the Princeton printers for long notes and articles.

If you're wondering where the nearest printer is, you can consult this list:
http://www.princeton.edu/clusters/printers.shtml

Ashley

There are also copiers in Frist and in libraries, and scanners in the clusters. Those I find unnecessary to have myself. Also, I'm fairly certain that the ones I have access to through the university are higher quality and faster than the all-in-one machines on the market.

I would agree with litho, a printer is not necessary. Printing is free and fast throught the University.

tunanfish & sleep deprived,

Thanks for the useful info about not needing a printer, esp. initially.

My D does not have a DVD or CD burner in her laptop. In the unlikely event of theft (assuming she uses a security cable!), is it a good idea to back up data via CDs or DVDs? I think OIT encourages that. (I thought I read that on their site.) If so, for her that would mean purchasing a DVD drive separately (& securing that, too!). Would you recommend doing so? Do P students commonly back up their data?

(P.S: D's laptop is an iBook, but a couple of years old.)

There's a thread about this in College Life:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=88082

I don't think that many students back up their data...
DVD definitely hold more, and if you're going to buy an external drive, DVD burners are so affordable nowadays you're better off getting that.

I don't think you need to worry about security. Laptops are left around all the time in libraries and study-rooms, and I've never heard of one getting stolen.

Backing up data is a good idea, but you really only need a backup of current work. Here are a few ways to do that:

(1) Get a USB memory stick. They're pretty cheap now, and really handy. It's about the only thing I use anymore for data transfer.

(2) Keep current files on your network drive. If anything happens to it there, OIT has its own backup system and may be able to recover the data.

(3) If you've got a lot and you're sure you need to back it up, make backups at the OIT New Media Lab. They've got DVD burners and sell media for them.

litho,
Is a "USB memory stick" the same thing as a flash drive?

Your other 2 pieces of info are super-helpful, BTW. Thanks so much.

how necessary is it to have a laptop lock/security cable?

I don't have one, though I don't lug my laptop around, but I've never seen a laptop with a security cable either.

Do people use security cables for leaving their laptops in their rooms or also in the library, etc.?

I didn't think I needed one for my room since I have a single and I plan to lock the door when I leave...

All of the printers OIT has listed are black and white laser.
What if you need color printing?

frenchbaroque - yes. + it's also called a thumb drive.

I think there's a colour printer in the art library in Marquand. Or it might be a colour copier, or maybe both. It's supposed to cost money (around 70 cents, if I remember correctly) charged to your student account to print in colour, but I didn't get charged the one time I used it.
