Ok I am moving tommorow and I know I should've called my college to find out but do most schools have some sort of ethernet splitter in each dorm room? I will have a total of three people in my room and I doubt they have three ethernet ports in each room which brings me to the question of do I or one of my roommates need to bring a router so that we can all connect to the LAN?
I'm curious if other colleges recommend to bring one or not so that I can make decide to bring mine or not. Thanks =)

If they don't have three ports, or have wireless when you get there, then I would make the school get you one! I've never heard of a college making you bring a router. Internet is included in your board fees. You could call IT to check though.

I wouldn't think so.. most schools just let you connect straight to the ethernet. If it's created for 2-3 people,i'm sure they woudl have planned that out when they put it in there. I mean in my room, there's 2 people, and 2 phone thing for each person (one for phone and one for ethernet (both cat 5 size so general ethernet cable size) so I thin you'll be ok.

in my school there is

1 ethernet connection for singles
2 ethernet connections for Doubles
3 ethernet connections for Triples
4 ethernet connections for Quads.

There is a specific port for each student.

yes you should bring a router anyway, why because all college networks are dirty. any standard consumer router will give you pretty decent protection, This is primarily due to NAT. Which is a gift on a any college network.

No matter how safe you think your school network is, Its Dirty. Theres no getting around it.

don't let the school run any scans on your, thats just loading root kits to hide there lovely software.

would a firewall solve that problem?

Many schools prohibit routers unless they're provided by the school, so be prepared to have yours taken away by IT if they find out you have one and they're not permitted.

At UVM we're not allowed any hardware like that unless it's an ethernet switch. No access points, no routers.

I'm in a triple room and we have 3 ethernet connections, but we found that the school put them in a 'good' location based on where they desks were when we moved in. But after you rearrange things and desks get moved, the ethernet connections are in a not-so-good place so get a long cord. Same with electrical outlets. Those are in weird places.

Some schools don't allow routers, but they allow hubs.

router - no
long ethernet cords - yes

Here, you can't plug anything into the ethernet jacks except for a cat-5 (ethernet) cable. If you plug in a hub/router etc. the jack will automatically inactivate itself and you'll have to call IS to get someone to come out and turn it back on.

Well I'm finally settled into my dorm and sad to say but I did need a router after all but I stupidly didn;t bring one. So now my two roommates and I had to go out and buy one...Kind of ****ed but oh well.

no your school should provide you with a router

There should be three ethernet ports in different locations on the dorm room. Basically, the ports should be by where they set up the desks in the room. So the only thing you have to bring is an ethernet cable.

yea... check all the walls
