Do i need to buy a graphing calculator?

Its on my list but all my money for school clothes and supplies is all in one. Thats a lot of my clothes cash i dont like to spend more than 50 bucks on supplies so will they provide a calculator or do i actually need to buy one?

Freshman generally don’t need one.

What math class are you taking?

Just get a Casio scientific calculator if you don’t already have a scientific one.

Just algebra thanks.

Algebra I or II?

I’m guessing II.

Well, our teacher recommends a Ti 89 for Algebra II H. But a scientific or a 84 will work just fine.

At my school you can borrow one from the school. It just depends on the school.

But seriously, if you’re on CC at this age, then you probably care more about your teachers/grades than your social life. I suggest getting the calculator.

Whether or not they will loan you one, it’s easier to have one in case the teacher runs out, if you need it outside of class, or for future math classes.

No, I am guessing Algebra I (if you went to my school you would figure Alg 1 freshman year). Anyway, you really don’t need one yet, but it might be helpful. Also, you DEFINITELY don’t need a TI-89 at all in high school. Yes, it is nice in Calculus, but definitely not necessary. TI-84 is just fine. My brother went through all of high school and undergrad mechanical engineering with just his good old TI-83 plus. So an 89 is not necessary.

A TI 89 for Algebra II, and more importantly your teacher RECOMMENDS it? Someone doesn’t know what they are talking about. While it gets easier to use as time goes on, a TI 84 is more functionally ergonomic for an Algebra II class.

I have a TI 89 but so far in AP Calc I have been downgrading to a 83+ for my tests and so forth. Do you need a graphing calculator?

The preferable path (if you can afford it) would be to get a TI 83 or 84 (the price difference is nominal) and use it through Precalculus at which point you should buy a TI 89 or Nspire…

All together it would cost about 250 dollars new. Used you could (I am sure) get it for far cheaper.

^She recommends it because she assumes that most people in our Alg II H class will move on to higher math classes.

Why would you buy an 84/83 freshman year and ditch it a few years later to get the 89? Those things are expensive and I’d rather just keep the same hunk of metal throughout high school. And on a side note, I would not throw away an 84 and get an Nspire…

But this is just my opinion. It’s more plausible for me to buy one 89 instead of buying two different graphing calculators.
