Do i need to complete ALL courses listed in IGETC and assist.org to transfer to a UC?

So i’ve just been really confused lately with these courses required to transfer to a UC (im thinking irvine and riverside).

My understanding is that the ones in assist.org are the major requirements, while IGETC, already given in its name, are the gen ed requirements.

I want to transfer as an engineering major (undecided between environmental or chemical) and the problem is if i were to take all the courses listed in assist and IGETC, i would accumulate at the most 89 units, which is obviously waay too much because i read that there is a maximum number of units you have to take to be eligible to transfer. I’ve met with a counselor twice and they both seem get me to complete both assist and IGETC courses, and it’s definitely overwhelming considering im heading for an engineering major.

I did notice that some of the UCR courses listed in assist.org already satisfy some (but still not all) of the IGETC requirements. As for UCI, however, there are far more major requirements that do not intersect at all with courses listed in IGETC.

I checked UC’s website and it says for both riverside and irvine that “IGETC is acceptable” but i’m still not quite sure what that implies. I will definitely follow up with a counselor soon but i’m just hoping to get it a bit cleared up now. sorry for being quite frantic with this long question and thank you in advance

EDIT: was looking more into UC’s website and saw the 7-course pattern page. Does this mean i actually DONT have to complete the whole IGETC list? though this 7-course pattern does seem much better, im still worried since i’ll still need to take 80 units for irvine, which unfortunately makes me non-eligible for TAG (79 is the max). again, sorry for the rambling but thank you very much

If you transfer without IGETC, you will have to complete the campus’ general education requirements.

Too many units to transfer becomes an issue if you have any upper division or UC units. Community college units are lower division, and lower division units over 70 semester units are treated as 70 for most UC transfer purposes (read policies carefully).

the UC system sends counselors around regularly to the CC. You should talk to one at your school.

Start by making sure you are meeting the engineering transfer requirements. For example https://admissions.uci.edu/apply/transfer/requirements.php and http://catalogue.uci.edu/informationforprospectivestudents/undergraduateadmissions/#transfer

I don’t know about these 2 schools, but at many UC the IGETC does not count to satisfy GE for engineering, so look into this. IGETC should be lower down on your list of priorities than satisfying the major requirements. They will not admit you if you don’t have required classes, you are less prepared for the major if you are missing some recommended ones and it can slow your progress once enrolled, but you can take the GE that you are missing anytime (I think one or two are required to be taken within your 1st year after xfer)
