Hello! I recently sent in my SIR to UC Irvine, but was accepted to nine other schools. Am I required to reject the other offers, or will my position become open automatically for waitlisted or appealing students after May 1st? I would like to let my offers to be given to other students, so I was just wondering how the process for that would be done.
As a courtesy, you should formally decline your acceptances at the other schools. If you do not SIR by May 1, your acceptance will be taken away and hopefully open a spot for a waitlisted applicant. The sooner the school knows about you declining your acceptance, the better.
Most schools have a “decline” button so it shouldn’t be a big deal for you to log in to the portal and do so. Though the UC’s will still give you to May first to “change your mind” so it doesn’t really seem to open a spot until after then anyway.
Did they need to formally advise you that you weren’t accepted to schools you applied to, or would you automatically know if you didn’t hear by April 1? Sounds absurd, doesn’t it?
Do the right thing and let them know you’re not coming. Save them the trouble of trying to woo you.
