Or rather....is having a printer in my dorm room a good idea?

need no
good idea yes

I recommend a printer scanner copier btw, so useful.

I can’t imagine not having one…at my school now, printing is 10 cents a page (b&w), and a lot of my lecture printouts are at least 20 pages, 2x a week (and thats just one class!!)

My HP 3 in one was only like 40 bucks…definitely worth having

buy this now @ wally mart

$29.00

HP Deskjet F2210 Printer, Scanner, and Copier All in One

Is there anywhere on campus you can print for free? I always printed all my high school stuff in open labs.

those that might be free are limited to like 3 pages or something like that…but i dont think even those exist anymore…

cornell is 9 cents per black white page. do not buy a inkjet… it’s a waste. buy a laserjet. i bought my color laser printer for 65$ and its running great. ive already printed like a few hundred pages worth of stuff and the toner isn’t even down to 2/3

what kind of pritner do u use anbu?

Definitely worth buying one. Sometimes you will have to pay like 15 bucks only for printing (like printing lecture notes, practice prelims, and stuff)

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. You think it’s probably best to just split one between your roommate and yourself?

its easier just to get one on your own. when you are no longer roommates, one of you will be printer-less! sometimes cornell gives you a print budget (if you are in a certain class or major or are a TA) but that usually doesn’t last.

ILR majors get something like $20 for printing…but it runs out mid-semester (if you’re printing the readings/lecture notes)

i would suggest a laser printer too…but those arent affordable to get in copier/scanner/printer combos.

anbu: where did you buy your laser printer? and which brand

i use a samsung cl 350 i think. i got it during a sale though. laser printer sales are pretty common. like a 1.5 months ago i helped my friend buy a laser printer with wireless for like 55$. having a scanner/copier would be helpful sometimes but you can just borrow your neighbors for that hahahah

not sure how reliable this brand is…but it has good reviews and is on sale now…

[Newegg.com - brother HL Series HL-2140 Personal Up to 23 ppm Monochrome Laser Printer - Printer - Laser Printers](http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828113290)

I would stay away from Brother printers.

Before you buy a printer. Look online and see how readily available a remanufactured cartridge is from reputable sources.

Definately want to go with laser. Quality for text pages is better and the cost per page is much cheaper.

One thing you have to remember is that printing with your own printer still isn’t free. You have the initial cost of the printer, plus paper plus toner/ink.

Remember too, printer companies are in the business of selling toner these days, not printers. So, the printers that use more toner or more expensive toner will be cheaper or nearly free to buy because they want to sell you toner.

one final note. most printers are set to stop printing when the toner is “low” not “gone”. You can override that setting so that it will continue printing. By default, most come set to give a low signal at 20% left. So, a lot of people will just buy a new cartridge and throw the old one away even though you could probably still print another 300-400 pages.

Laser printer manufacturers are in the business of selling printers.
Inkjet manufacturers are in the business of selling ink.

Unlike inkjet printers, laser printers are not usually sold below cost because the toner is not replaced often enough for this to be a viable business model. Inkjet printers (except for those from Kodak, which makes a point of this in their PR) are ALWAYS sold below cost with the difference to be made up in ink sales.

just sell the printer on ebay after the toner is out. then use that money + some of your own and buy a new printer. do not buy a new toner. its a waste

Well the last three laser printers I have purchased, I bought instead of replacing the cartridges. I simply watched for a good deal online and was able to buy a “brand new” printer with full cartridges for less than the price of the cartridges by themselves. So, I guess I just see it a little differently.

When you buy a printer, it usually doesn’t come with a full toner cartridge. It usually comes with a cartridge that only lasts ~1500 pages.
