So I am currently taking classes that I had to take to fulfill my psych major. I currently switched my major to CS.
I WANT TO GET OUT OF THIS CC. This is my 3rd year here. 2nd year going fulltime. In the spring I will take pre calc, C ++ programming, and either chem, or something else to complete IGETC. I will take calc 1 during summer.
My question is will the UC’s or CSU’s accept me even though I do not have some of the prereqs done for CS? I know I am WAY behind other students who have done their prereqs.
My “counselor” said to stay another year and finish the prereqs. Sorry, but I’m not planning on staying here. I am an athlete and I don’t know if I will get picked up by any schools because it’s typically harder for CC athletes to get a scholarship. I play softball btw.
I just don’t want to NOT get a scholarship and get stuck. Should I apply as a psych major then change majors once I get there? Will some schools even allow me to change majors?
CS without pre-calc done prior to the adcom review? Zero chance.
In fact, your chances will be zero with any math intensive major. Why should thy admit someone that lacks the track record to succeed? There are literally thousands of students that want to do CS. There is simply not enough space to accommodate everyone.
Switching majors is a very intensive process. Many CS transfers take 3 years to finish all of their requirements.
You may want to consider your options. In the long run, another year at CC is not too big of a deal (although I understand that it gets boring). You could also minor in CS, which might require fewer prereq’s.
Don’t blame the system. Just go through CC, work as hard as you can, and finish what you need to. The CC system exists for your benefit.
You don’t HAVE to major in CS, but if you are making that choice, then you must accept all that comes along with it.
CS majors are often not advised to follow IGETC, but it seems that you are almost finished with it - so it probably makes sense to finish it up.
Get an internship or something. There are plenty of things you can do with another year. It’s only dull if you allow it to be.
Edit: Also, realize that there are very few scholarship opportunities for transfers. That’s just how it is.
Perhaps you should stick with psych if you have the pre-reqs done. If you are applying to Berkeley’s Psych I believe they are allowing calc in summer as it’s a pre-req just added, so they added some leeway. CS is another story entirely.
It’d be nice to hear some context like your GPA/EC/etc, but yeah CS majors need a lot of math, and given that they have not see if you can take on Calc 1-2-3, it might be a very long stretch.
If you do transfer as a psychology major, changing majors may be limited to those majors that you can complete without delaying graduation (and delaying graduation may cause your financial aid and scholarships to run out before you graduate). If you are behind on CS prerequisites, it is unlikely that you can change to CS without delaying graduation.
