Hi
I just started prepping for the June ACT. I started With the red book. It didn't have much info on prep. So I started with a practice test. I got a 27 on my first try. Should I panic. Or am I stupid and should simply study. I mean it was no prep, straight practice test. I do plan to study the PR book, Math tips book, reading and English tips, Barron's Workbooks and Barron's 36... I want to get scores in the 33+ range. Is this something that indicates that won't be possible or the PR book and all the books mentioned above will get me there...
I feel both scared and stupid asking this question but I'm serious.

27 is a good starting point. I would not say getting 33+ is impossible. If you keep practicing and go through the answers to find your weaknesses, it is indeed quite possible to get ~20% improvement in your score. The only problem is that you may have other exams and school works between now and June. I guess you are in Junior year, so you can always retake it in Fall if you are still shy of your target score in June.

^^ I’m not in Junior year. I graduated last year. I had to take 2 gap years due to severe health issues. So to sum it up, what you’re saying is that it is definitely possible to get a 33+ if I study all the books till June?

My daughter improved from 31 to 35 in practice score after 3 months, so it is very possible for you to improve from 27 to 33 as it is still 10% below the ceiling. She did almost all the practice exams (~15) from all the books available in local library.

No need to panic at all. That’s great for your first time. You will definitely be able to improve after you begin prepping and work on ameliorating your weakest section.

Thanks a lot everyone!
Starting prep today!

Seriously with the thread title? You’re making it sound like a 27 is an affliction. A lot of students would love that score, so try not to sound quite as insulted.

The ACT is a skill, not a measure of intelligence. I scored around a 25 or a 26 my first practice I believe, and I scored a 32 on my first test. My practice scores going into my second test were around a 34, but I couldn’t pull through that time. The trick is to practice. You will get better, and you almost always do better when you actually take it than when you do when you practice. You’ll be fine.
