So I owe around $10,000 in student loans at my previous university. I plan on transferring to my new university in Fall so do I need to start paying back those loans in the Fall semester or after I graduate from my new school?
You do not have to start repaying your student loans if you are still in school. The interest still accures on your loan but you do not have to start repayment yet.
If your loans are unsubsidized…they will continue to accrue interest. If they are subsidized…they won’t.
You need to make sure you are officially withdrawn from college A. As in-- do it today. Many people trip up on this and it bites them down the road. You need a letter or email from the bursar (save it) and registrar and housing office (if you lived on campus) which states that you have formally withdrawn. You do not want your account racking up random fees because you failed to withdraw properly. The bursar’s office needs to state that your account is zero (no library fees, no lost key charge, no $10 student health services balance). The registrar’s office needs to affirm that you withdrew in good standing and that they will forward your transcript to the next institution you may enroll in. Etc.
