I didn't keep my varsity letters from freshman year and some of my volunteer hours logs, so that might pose a problem.

Not unless a school asks for more information. But I think there should be. If so, likely all the great EC’s that we read about would be cut at least in half. Way too much puffing on the EC’s.

I think some colleges randomly check a few applicants’ ECs, so proof should be obtainable. You don’t need to send proof in with your application, and I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
I don’t think they care much about exactly how many hours you volunteered.

If a certain EC is what bumps you into the accepted pile at an elite school or gets you a full tuition merit scholarship at a mid-tier school, the college will verify it. They will likely verify it without asking for proof from you.

I read somewhere that if your awards/EC’s aren’t easily accessible, they won’t matter that much anyway.

A handful of my D’s apps and scholarship apps actually asked for e-mails and phone #s of contacts for all the volunteer/EC stuff, which was a bit of a bother. Not many though. In some cases a quick google search will turn up positive evidence, depending on the EC. Your name will be on the website’s team roster, a website blurb about a concert or contest winner, a school’s announcement of solo ensemble festival awards.

I really doubt they check unless you have something really impressive or rare.
