I applied to a bunch (20) schools on Commonapp, and they obviously all require a midyear report. My school charges us $2 per transcript to send to these schools, but from what I've heard it's the counselors that do everything and send them. So my question is if I have to shell out another $40 just to send my midyear report, or does my HS counselor take care of that?

Why not ask the school counselors directly??

I did- my counselor is a newbie and she has no idea, so I have to wait until she finds out from someone else. In the mean time I’d like to know what the standard procedure is

Colleges generally accept an uploaded unofficial midyear report submitted through the common app website by a counselor. If your counselor is willing to do that, depending on your school’s policy you might avoid the cost of another set of official transcripts.

My counselor(s) only send grades by mail- do you think they could just send an unofficial transcript of my semester grades?

Most high schools will automatically send the MY & Final reports when available. It’s not typical to require further requests & fees.

Often there is one transcript boss in the counseling office, who does the electronic uploads (or mailings). Try finding out who he/she is, and ask. Be very nice – they’re usually really overloaded.

I know the woman in my school who does that (she is really rude lol). I guess I’ll just have to wait and see what my counselor says :/

exstudent, you’re making an assumption that has already been stated is not true. This school MAILS transcripts and reports. Just because the student used the common app doesn’t mean the school uploads everything. Yes, it would be much more convenient, and save time and money, but it doesn’t! Our HS started sending everything this way just this year - I heard the horror stories from other parents about previous years, and we have our own issues this year.

OP, you will have to wait until your GC finds out from another GS - or you can talk to one of the other GC (I’m assuming there is more than one in your school). D is dealing with a new GC this year, and while he has a steep learning curve, he is good about asking the other counselors and getting back to us pretty quickly. If it’s a question that might end up in a string of questions, it might be best to see if you can meet with both your GC and an experienced one - so you both will know the answer quickly, and can save trouble for any of the other students in a similar position.

I would hope the transcript fee covers everything for the year - the initial transcript and MY report, and in the case of the final choice, the final transcript at the end of the year, verifying you graduate. You can ask if it can be submitted electronically through the common app, but it may require more work than they’re willing to do, if they don’t already use software that can interface. Our school only last year transitioned to Powerschool, and now uses Naviance - they have an interface built in. Without that, it might require a significant amount of data entry for each student, even though it would only have to happen once.

I thought schools using Naviance uploaded transcripts and thus did not have to mail them?
