Do I need to send transcripts from schools where I was a transient student?

Hi, I'm planning to apply to graduate schools in chemistry soon, and I'm wondering if I need to send transcripts from schools where I took courses as a transient student over the summers. These courses are listed on the transcript for my own school, which is making me curious about whether they really need a transcript that will say exactly the same thing. It will cost me a lot more money if I have to do so.

Ask the admissions counselors. If it is included on your final transcript (as are mine) they may not want it - although typically grades are not included, which may be a concern. It may also depend on whether the courses were part of your major or if they were just general ed. requirements.

The grades for these courses are included at least in the unofficial transcript, but two of the three courses were required for my major (General Physics 2 and Organic Chemistry 2). The third was an elective for my minor (differential equations). I suppose I should email the admissions counselors at each of the schools where I plan to apply?

Personally, I would e-mail them, or give them a call. If the grades are on there then they may not need the transcripts from the other schools. Mine just name the courses and how many credits transferred - no grades are included, so I will have to forward all transcripts.

Let them know there are only 3 classes on those additional transcripts, that might make a difference as well. That would be a lot of money to spend just so that they can see 3 additional courses, especially if the grades are already included on your primary transcripts.

You’ll also want to verify with your school that the grades are in fact included on your official transcripts as well.

You can probably find that answer in the FAQ section of the graduate school. Some will want separate transcripts from your summer courses, some won’t need them.

When I was applying to graduate school, Austin was very explicit that not providing official transcripts from all colleges I had ever attended (even for courses that are noted on another college’s transcript) was reason enough to be separated from the university if they ever find out. On the other extreme, Stanford only wanted transcripts from universities that I had attended for at least one year.
