Do I need to separate this activity on apps?

I'm not sure how to record this activity on applications. I've volunteered for the local Marsh since 10th grade through a combination of writing (interviews, pamphlets, etc) and research (ways to fix local algae problems, marsh science).

I started writing in sophomore year, but I didn't start doing research until junior year. I originally intended to write down the activity as "Writing and Research for Marsh." It's one of my main volunteer activities, and I'm writing my common app essay about it.

However, after looking at the common app, I realized that I probably need to separate the activity into "Writing for Marsh" and "Research for Marsh," as I started each portion during separate years. Is this necessary? I'd prefer to keep it as a single activity, as I worked with the same organization and people. Thanks for any help.

If you are writing your common application essay about this activity, there is no need to separate it. Admissions officers will simply think you are trying to fill up all the slots. The fact you will elaborate on the activity in your essay is sufficient.

And also, I thought you meant Marsh, the grocery store, when I first read this.

Lol. I thought you were talking about Marsh too. Yes, I agree with xAmbivalentx. Good luck on your common app. :)

Thanks for the responses. Lol, there aren’t any grocery stores named Marsh around here.

Would I have to indicate in my essay when I started the research portion of my volunteer work?

You would not have to, but it would greatly benefit you. You want to paint as detailed of a picture of yourself as possible, and including your transition from writing to research definitely shows development on your part.

^Thanks. I’ll try to write about the transition.

Bump. I’d like another opinion on whether I can include this under a single activity :)
