Do I need to take 4 years of math?

This is what I want my schedule to look like next year:

AP American History
AP Lit
AP Human Geography
G/T Physics
Newspaper
TV Production

I'm planning on majoring in film and I think substituting a 4th year of math for an elective like TV production is much more practical. Wouldn't colleges rather see I have an interest in something and am willing to sacrifice? It's not like I'm being lazy with 3 AP, Gifted Physics, and Newspaper (which is weighted as honors because it requires times spent before and after school). TV production teaches how to operate cameras and equipment etc. and it will help me much more in my goal of becoming a filmmaker than Calculus ever will, IMO.

Will it look bad if I don't take 4 maths? Am I dooming myself?

well, what math classes have you taken so far? if you've already taken calc. then i'd say your fine, and i don't think colleges will think it's that bad, but if you haven't, then i'd personally recommend taking calc. in hs... it also depends on what colleges you are applying to...

I've taken Algebra I and II and Geometry. If I were to take math next year I would take pre-Calc. I don't think I could take Calc in highschool even if I took pre-calc. I would take something like college algebra or just quit after that. I can't handle Calculus.

I'm planning on going to FSU with Bright Futures scholarship program. I might apply to NYU also.

In a word, yes. You do need to take pre-calculus. If you'd taken Calc and you were asking this, I might say it's negotiable, but I'd probably still say yes. Algebra II really isn't high level enough to be the highest math you pursue in highschool. NYU will expect at least precal- I don't know about FSU. In general, I think math's an extremely important thing to have a really strong basis in.

I'd say generally that no class that focuses primarily on learning how to use any particular piece of equipment or technology is worthwhile, save maybe in a trade school (which I am assuming is not your intended direction).

Now if it was something along that lines of say, maybe some sort of "Principles of Cinematography" which focuses on the needed conceptual skills, techniques and theory of cinematography, and in which you 'happen' to learn how to use the equipment as part of being able to even DO the course work, I'd say go for it.

Thats just my two cents

Once I finished precal in 11th grade, I was done with math. I barely passed every single year in algebra 1, 2, geometry and precal, Math is NOT for me. Our school doesn't even offer Calculus, the only option we have is to go from Pre-Cal to AP Calcular, *** is that?

Some school districts require 4 years of math to graduate, like mine, for example, so if I were you, I'd make sure I'd be able to graduate with only 3 years of math.

in state resident for FSU? you should be okay. try emailing admissions and asking what they think lol

for NYU you, I would think about taking the 4th year of math

and in general, it's just good to have a BG in math that includes precalc

I would take precalc instead of human geography.

take the math, colleges like to see strength in core courses

Your school weights newspaper?

Unbelievable.
