Do I need to take a language?

I'm applying to merced, UCSC and Davis as an english major and I've taken 3 years of spanish in high school. Assist.org says I need 1 year of a college level course in language other than english -- but do I need a year before I transfer? I remember my counselor said I could take spanish 1 next semester and take spanish 2 there after I transfer but I could've misheard.

Could someone clarify? I'm freaking out right now.

I’m currently a 3rd year at a JC so I havent’ taken spanish in a long time. So will I need to take a spanish 1/2 now to transfer or both even though I’ve taken it in high school? Please help.

Are you using IGETC for admission? If so, you can use your two years of HS foreign language so long as you meet the criteria. You should be able to find the IGETC form for your JC online. I think the rule is two years of the same language back to back years with C- or better. I could be mistaken so make sure you check.

High school language counts, I am pretty sure, as fulfillment of the IGETC language requirement. As long as it was at least two years and you passed you should be good.

Does anyone happen to know where on the application you are supposed to tell them about this? All it asks about high school in the academic history section is “last high school attended.” Am I missing something, or it this something that is taken care of when actually submit our transcripts (for both HS, and college)? Thanks

I’ve completed my IGETCs.
I don’t know if the 3 years of language from high school count as “college-level courses.” I’m taking the rest of the english classes needed for transferring as an English major next semester so I should be good yes? I’d call admissions myself, but it’s thanksgiving break and I have to submit my app by the 30th.

If that’s the case, I don’t understand why my counselor told me to take spanish again.

What JC do you go to? My JC’s IGETC states: " Two years of high school coursework in one language other than English with a final term grade of “C-” or better"

You can use the foreign language in high school - I believe they’ll ask for your high school transcript later on.

Do transfers in english majors have to take more than 2 years? Straight from assist.org :

The following lower-division courses are required as preparation for the

Literature major:

Proficiency in a second language is required for all literature majors:
One year (three quarters or equivalent) of college-level study of a non-English
language or demonstrated reading ability at this level. (The study of American
Sign Language may not be used to satisfy this requirement.)

…if so, I don’t understand why retaking spanish 1 will help me. Or does my counselor not know what he’s talking about?

There are two separate issues:

Whether your 3rd level high school Spanish fulfills IGETC.

Whether your 3rd level high school Spanish is sufficient for your major. In this case, you need to check each campus’ English major to see what it actually requires. If the English major requires a foreign literature course in the foreign language, then you need to know the language well enough to take that literature course, regardless of whether you learned it in high school, college, or otherwise.

1) The IGETC sheet just says: High school: Two years same language “C” or better (Which I have- 1 A, 2 Bs)

2) Assist.org is super vague and just says: One year (3 quarters or equivalent) of college level study of a non-english major.

Maybe my counselor was confused.
