I was told to take both tests, and that i'd have a better chance at colleges if I sent both scores. Is this true? I took the SAT and did poorly, but I have a big blue collegeboard study book I can use.

Colleges have conversion charts to compare ACT and SAT scores. Most people do better on one than the other, so if you take both, you can have the higher score counted.

most every school uses both. Traditionally, the ACT was more of an east coast thing and the SAT more out west. The ACT tends to test more factual subject matter and the SAT is directed more to the abstract.

Bottom line, can't imagine it hurting to take both. Most schools will typically look to your best score only. If you take the SATs several times, some will even look at your best M and best V from different tests and combine those.
