Do I need to take more foreign language courses?

Let me ask this better.

IF I took two years of a foreign language in high school, would I need to take it again or complete more? My major is sociology and I'm not sure if that is a requirement. I was looking at the Marquette suggested curriculum for Sociology and Foreign Language was on there so I am not necessarily sure if it is a requirement or not.

At Marquette everyone has to take a number of liberal arts courses including foreign languages (engineering majors and certain sciences are excluded from foreign languages). You will take an online test / survey during the summer prior to enrollment that will serve as a placement test. That way they will place you at the right level.

Wait what? I’m looking to be a transfer not freshman though…

You only mentioned taking high school courses not college. If you took college courses you would need to check if they would transfer. If they were only high school then you would have to take college level courses to comply with the curriculum. Being proficient in more than one language is great for your resume.

I’m not interested in taking foreign language again because that was what hurt my GPA in high school. I do not plan on or want to take foreign language at College anymore. Right now I am just curious, Do I need to be at the 3rd or 4th level of a 2nd language in order to graduate from Marquette?

I have no clue how to read this

<a href=“Social and Cultural Sciences // Marquette University”>Social and Cultural Sciences // Marquette University;

It only says suggested so I am just wondering if that is a requirement or not. I know certain universities require you to take 3 or 4 levels of a foreign language in order to even graduate or get a BA or BS degree. I personally do not want to transfer to those schools.

Here, this link is a lot simpler [Sociology major: Facts & what you can do with a major in sociology at Marquette](http://www.marquette.edu/explore/major_socio.shtml) as you can see you have to take two years of foreign language. High school courses do not qualify for any college level course unless they are AP and you pass the exam. Even as a transfer you need to fulfill all requirements. Most major universities will most likely require some foreign language because sociology falls under Arts & Sinces (liberal Arts). I would not base my college decision on the foreign language or elective requirements, but that is just my advice.

Where does it say it is required? It says suggested curriculum, is that required or something or what?

Actually I did read in another link that you need at least 8-12 credits for Sociology major of a Foreign language.

I do have a question though. Say I took two years of high school spanish, would I need to get to that 4th level of Spanish or French in order for it to count? I can’t say take two years of high school spanish and then two semesters of college french? Or just restart Spanish again?

When they say suggested is regarding when you decide to take the courses. For example you do not have to take the foreign languages requirements your freshman year, you could delay them to soph. / junior year, that is what the suggested means. Does not mean that you do not have to take the courses. Total credits would add to at least 12 since you would take 4 semesters of the language I & II, III & IV and they would be at least 3 credits per semester. Here is the link to the test /survey explanation [Placement Examination Procedures | Foreign Languages and Literatures | Marquette University](<a href=“Languages, Literatures and Cultures Homepage // Marquette University”>Languages, Literatures and Cultures Homepage // Marquette University)

But is it required that I do take 2-4 courses/semesters of a Foreign Language?

Yes, is part of your curriculum.

I see, how tough do you think it is to transfer to Marquette? Like what GPA in college will I need to get? Marquette has always been a school I have been interested in and I have high school friends already there.

Sorry, do not know much about stats for transfers. The link for transfers includes a wizard to find which credits will transfer [Transfer Students | Marquette University](Transfer To Marquette // Undergraduate Admissions // Marquette University) . Would suggest you talk to admissions to find the range of stats on admitted transfer students. Maybe some of your friends at MU can help you get those stats.
