Do I need to take Test during Orientation to get credit for Govenment AP?

Do I need to take a test during orientation to get my AP credit for government? The UT Austin website said something like that.

You can take it later if you want, but orientation is definitely the best time to do it. Just get it out of the way early. If you get a 4-5 on the AP test, it doesn’t matter how you do on the Texas Government test. The test is just there as a formality because the Texas legislature requires UT graduates to “know” Texas government.

I did not see a sign-up thing for it when I registered for orientation. I only saw a Spanish and French language test. How do you sign up for the test?

Would i need to take the test if I already have credit for government through my high schools dual credit program?

I’m wondering the same thing as EnticingPlague.

My S took the test either just before classes started or during the first week of classes last year. I think UT has to receive the AP GOV score before one can register to take the test. College Board will start releasing AP scores to campus July 1 for those who request scores to be sent to UT. FYI- AP GOV will only give credits for one of the two GOV courses required for the engineering students.

I am not sure about the duel credits but you will meet with an academic advisor during orientation and s/he will tell you what is expected.

Students with credit for GOVT 2301/2302 (the community college identification for U.S./Texas government) do not need to take the Texas Government test. By completing these course(s), you have already received college credit transferable to UT for this/these courses, regardless if you received high school credit (dual credit) as well.

The Texas Government test is for AP credit eligible students only as the AP test does not cover Texas government–it is a general test. Thus, the Texas legislature created the additional testing requirement.

How should we study for the test?

what if we’ve only taken the semester of U.S. Government and not the semester of Texas govt?

Take a look at the following UT website on Texas politics.

[Welcome to Texas Politics](http://texaspolitics.laits.utexas.edu/)

It’s the closest thing to Cliff notes for Texas government test and it is free.

If you have taken the AP Gov’t exam, make sure that you sign up for the Texas Gov’t Only test (30 minute long). The American Gov’t Test listed under College Board CLEP Examinations includes American Gov’t in addition to Texas Gov’t (2 1/2 hours long).

Okay thanks! And do we take this during the first week of classes?

Thank you TXEX

TCCN course GOVT 2301 is Federal Government which transfers to GOVT 310L at UT Austin. You still need to take GOVT 312L whether at UT or at a CC (which is GOVT 2302–Texas Government–at a CC). This has no bearing on taking the aforementioned Texas Government test as that is only for AP students.

thank you so much, txex86!
