One of the Common app’s essay prompts is talking about a talent. I love dancing and I personally believe that I’m very good at it. Nevertheless, I’m not quite comfortable with the idea of having myself recorded while dancing to a song. I do not want to major in art (I’ve already chosen Neuroscience up to now) and I’m not applying to any colleges that emphasize on arts such as Juilliard.
Do I necesssarily need to upload a video if I chose to talk about dancing in my essay?
By the way, in my college list are Columbia, Yale, MIT and some others which I think are not art-focused (yet correct me if I’m wrong).
You do not need to submit an artistic supplement, but you should make sure that your counselor is aware of your passion, and mentions it in a letter of recommendation. Most colleges do not want a lot of extra letters, but - if most of your dancing is done outside of school - you could get your dance teacher(s) to contact your college adviser with any glowing comments. You can also mention your accomplishments when listing extracurriculars, and incorporate it into your essay(s). Discuss how your love of music and movement have inspired you to learn more about the mind/body connection through neuroscience.
To woogzmama: Does my counselor need to include my passion in his recommendation letters? When listing my extracurricular activities, should I explain them right next to each one of them? I have lost contact with my former dance teachers and I don’t have any way of contacting them. Thank you so much for your help! It’s great!
To T26E4: I’ve been told to have great dancing skills, but I’m not sure if talented enough to upload a video.
To oldfort: If it’s not essential given the conditions explained in my post, I’d rather not upload anything.
I would say unless dancing is a major commitment for you (dance with a professional group) or you plan on going into the arts, I don’t think it would be beneficial. They will take you at your word in the essay just like they will the rest of your application.
