I just received my AP scores. Though I cancelled my Chemistry score, it still came. I got a 3. Do I need to withhold this score for admissions purposes at Ivy-caliber schools? My other scores are U.S. gov-4, World History-5, Bio-5, Calc AB-5, English Language- 5, if this makes a difference.

lol, no. that's still good.

You never need to withhold grades for admissions purposes. No college that I know of requires an official AP score report for the admissions process. The only time you send in an official report is after you decide to attend a certain school. For admissions, your application will ask you to list your AP scores, so you can selectively write/omit your scores. Such a strategy has been recommended by admissions officers.

how do they check then?

So there is no way they can find out I got the 3 unless I tell them? Do you think I should mention it or leave it off? I have heard a 3 can hurt you in elite college admissions.

The only way they could find out your score is if your school includes them on your transcript. Talk to your registrar and see if they will omit AP scores from your transcript.

So do I need to ask them to take the 3 off my transcript? How will elite schools look at this score?

Who knows how they will look at it? This is a decision that you have to make for yourself. You may want to talk to your counselor about it.

dude a 3 is only considered "bad" at CC, do NOT withhold it, you did fine

a 3 is still good.

dude, it's better to take the class and get an A and then get a 1. all APs are hard, and adcoms know that some teachers don't teach toward the test.

in response to the original question, no.

The colleges you apply to will receive your hs transcript. It will say AP Chemistry. If you withold the score, the college is going to know it. From their prospective, you could have made a 1 or not even taken the test at all-- they can't tell! Let them know you got a 3. Although it may not transfer as college credit to ivy-caliber colleges, it still is a decent score. Don't let them assume you did horrible by not telling them the score.

Hi all,
I am in this same position with AP Spanish Language. I unfortunately got stuck with an incredibly bad teacher so I am worried that my score on the AP test will reflect that.
My question is: If you do withold/don't write your scores that you are not proud of when they tell you to list your scores, doesn't that tell the colleges automatically that you probably got a bad score and don't want to show it? I mean...why else would you hide it, right? so i guess what I really want to know is if you decide NOT to self report the scores you don't like, will that hurt you as a candidate in any way?

my AP scores got sent to william and mary (and to other schools), but I still managed to get in from out of state with my 2 in macroecon and 3 in micro econ. Don't worry about it.
