Do I put senior year only sports on my resume?

I spent most of my high school time trying to become drum major, my dream. So I came to every band practice and performance early, and put in maximum extra time for my first three years. Then when my drum major tryouts came, I did not get it, or anything special role in the band, which freed up my time commitment again for my senior year.

I am doing cross country and swim team with my new free time, its not like I could not do it before, I just used to think it would hurt my chances at drum major. I joined cross country because starting last spring, never before, I just loved distance running for some reason, I would jog almost 6 miles a day. I used to be a competitive swimmer also, but I stopped in high school to focus on band, and I started again this year because I always wanted to do it. Now I am filling out resumes for ROTC and Service Academies, when I look at it, it seems like they are resume fillers. I don’t know if I should just not mention the sports at all.

Include the sports. It’s part of who you are and what you are doing with your time. Be authentic and don’t try to guess what admissions committees want to see. Also, your story about not being selected for drum major but then discovering a love for distance running might be an interesting theme in your essays.

Good luck!
