I want to do Mechanical Engineering but I think it will hurt y chances of getting in because most school have extra requirements for engineering applicants and I would be willing to do liberal arts for a year if necessary just to get in.

It depends on the school. There are some schools where applying for the engineering major would be more competitive that applying undecided to the school’s college of Arts and Science. In some cases, it’s harder to get in when you apply undecided because it’s often the most popular “major” and sometimes schools will set a limit to the number of undeclared applicants they will accept.

I think they would wan’t someone who is a fairly well qualified applicant if they were to accept them undeclared because they should be qualified to enter into any major at the school theoretically…

There are two things you need to consider.

1) If the engineering program is harder to get into, what’s going to happen your freshman year that will improve your chances?

2) If for whatever reason you can’t transfer into engineering, would you be happy in the liberal arts program?
