So I recently found out that I scored a 232 on the Psat :) I think that should qualify for the NJ cutoff score since last year it was around 226, but does that mean I will be a semifinalist? or do other factors (like your actual sat score come into consideration)?

Semi Final is all about the score. A 232 should be a mortal lock. Congrats. Now on to Finalist. Talk to your school advisor.

Wow thanks!! This comment just made my day

232 will definitely qualify you for semifinalist, I haven’t ever heard of anything over 230 not qualifying :). It is only your PSAT score that qualifies you, so no other scores (i.e. the SAT) will come into account.

ahh so i will be a semifinalist? (sorry if im being bothersome since i’ve been hearing different things from other people :P)

Your PSAT score qualifies you for semi finalist. Then you fill out an application including an essay and need to send a qualifying (over 1960, I believe) SAT score in order to become a finalist. Something like 90% of semi finalists make it to finalist.

Oh and if course congrats! Fantastic score :)

CC has a entire forum dedicated to this question: <a href=“National Merit Scholarships - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/
