My parents immigrated to the US in the 90s. They've attended community college and my dad has gone through a real estate school, but neither of them has a degree. However, my uncles and aunts have gone to universities and obtained degrees. Does this disqualify me from being a first-generation? Does the definition include your extended family or just your immediate? Thanks!

It depends on the college, but some schools will not consider you first gen because your parents attended college. It doesn’t matter that they didn’t get a degree to some.

As far as I know, most colleges will consider you first-gen because neither of your parents completed an undergraduate degree (bachelor’s level). Still, each college will have it’s own policy, so check.

You don’t really have to concern yourself too much about it, they will not ask ‘are your first generation.’ They will ask your parents history and will decide themselves if community college counts. I would not list RE training unless it is considered eligible college coursework that would count toward a degree. They will not ask or care about your aunts and uncles.

Ah, okay. Thank you!
