Do I really need the TOEFL to get a visa??

So ive already been admitted to the college i want to attend. there are a couple of people, however, who tell me i might run into trouble at the visa office because i havent taken the toefl, which is supposedly the norm for indian students going abroad. there are others who say it shouldnt matter, so long as i have an I-20 from a good university, and speak articulately during the visa interview.
Do any of you know about this, or of anyone who didnt take it?
Also, do you think SAT results would do instead?

I think it shouldn’t be a problem at all… You got accepted by UChicago, an exceptional school… So not having TOEFL shouldn’t be a problem at all with the visa process :)

phr34k right also SAT english is harder then TOEFL and the visa officers know that… You dont have to worry at all… They will not question you on this matter.

Email your international office at Chicago. I would think SAT scores, your school records, your admission offer letter should be enough but perhaps people who have gone through this process will know (@yithguy,@anialways, others from last year ?), which consulate are you going?

For my D TOEFL was not required.

I think it is more of a College’s requirement. If you got accepted without it then logically it is not required for Visa. I-20 is issued only when you get accepted and you get accepted when you meet the requirements, one of which is your English language skills, and so I don’t think this should be an issue.

You do not need TOEFL as requirement for visa , for sure,

The following is from UChicago’s site,

https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/applicants/international/#englishtest

“The University of Chicago only admits students who have demonstrated a superior level of English language competence: we strongly recommend a score of 104 or higher on the Internet Based TOEFL or 600 or higher on the Paper Based TOEFL. Minimum required scores in the IELTS are an overall score of 7, with sub scores of 7 each.”

“The only exceptions are for applicants who for two or more years have attended a high school where the primary language of instruction is English in a country where English is one of the official languages (England, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, or Pakistan, for example). UChicago does not offer an ESL program for admitted students.”

^thank you for your answers…

@fall2016parent- i’ll probably be going to the one in chennai
