There are some colleges that ask you

"Where else are you applying?"

Do I really need to answer that question?
I'm afraid it might hurt my chances to get in..

People on CC have different opinions on this. Some think if you list schools that have higher “rankings” (whatever that means) than the school that asks for the info, the asking school will downgrade you for considering it a safety. My concern with leaving the question blank is that the school will most likely know that you’re not being honest. (“Really, this person is applying ONLY to us? Obviously, the applicant is not telling us something…”)

I’m sure they’d be unwilling to disclose their full list of applicants, and I’d be similarly less than fully forthcoming in fulfilling their request, giving them only a limited list of schools of similar academic focus and with similar or lesser selectivity.

Wow, I used similar three times in one sentence.

I like the idea that colleges use it to decide how much aid (merit aid?) they might need to give you in order to entice you to come to the school.

If you list other schools that give good financial aid or are “better” than the school might need to do a better job to entice you to come.

I have no idea how accurate this is though.

I gave a shortened list of other schools, as Sherpa recommended. I listed schools with similar locations (in big cities), similar academic profiles, and then a couple that were more selective–in case it would make them want me more–and a couple less selective, so the school would know it wasn’t “just” a safety. I probably left out half my college list, and I think that’s fine.

I would just list similar schools like everyone else is saying…nothing too big or extravagant and if you’re applying to a lot of schools, maybe list like a fraction of them or so because applying to a lot doesn’t really show much interest :p.

I’m gonna list some similar schools like you guys said!
Thank you
