So here is my situation:

I have lived in the U.S. for a little more than 5 years now, I am a legal resident, and I graduated from a public, english-speaking high school. I have had straight A's in all of my english classes (including one at my current college!) and I passed both AP Language and AP Lit...

yet according to most of the colleges I am applying to it seems that just because English is not my native language I MUST take the TOEFL test.. is this true? The test costs $170 and takes 4.5 hours, the money and time I definitely don't want to waste on something so trivial. Does this mean that even US born citizens who grew up speaking Spanish must take the exam? this just sounds ridiculous...

does someone in a position close to mine have any insight as to what I should do? I tried phoning the admissions offices in the schools I am applying to but they all gave me inconclusive answers...

any help is welcomed. thanks
