Do I stand a chance at Carnegie Mellon???

Im applying to Carnegie Mellon as a reach school. I'm planning to apply for either comp. science engineering, or electrical eng. Here's the situation...

3.6 W GPA - damn low, i know (slacked off freshman year, upward trend tho)
SAT I - 1420
SAT II - 800 Math IIC, 760 Writing, 700 Physics

Hardest courseload at my school - 6 APs by graduation (mostly 4s). A bunch of Honors classes freshman and sophomore year.

Good recs, and solid essays - talked about a family tragedy that occured and how I am proud of the way I dealt with it; also wrote about an architecture class I took at Berkeley and tied it into my interest in engineering.

I realize that its a huge reach for me but I'm applying anyway cause I kno its a great school for engineering. I don't know if my test scores are good enough to offset my GPA, but I hope so. :) Also, I don't know if it helps but I'm from CA and I think I'm the only kid in my school applying there.

Thanks a lot guys. Tell me what you think...

i think you have a great shot.

Wow, that was quick cd8705. Thanx, Im glad u think that. Do you know what they are looking for specifically... like do they put a lot of weight on test scores, essays, ECs, etc.??

Smiffer88, I'm not quite sure what CMU is looking for, but I'm pretty sure that they would look in a similar manner as the other colleges do.
Anyways, I think you have a great chance of getting in, your stats are pretty strong for CMU, at least, in my opinion.

Thanx Macrokim. I know some schools put a lot of emphasis on test scores, and others are looking more for well-rounded kids (strong ECs) rather than those with high test scores. Thats sorta what I was wondering... Thanx tho

Hey, man I am applying there too. I think you have a great shot. Hope we both get in.

Thanx boomer. Cheers to that!
