Do I Stand a Chance for PSP Semifinalist?

Hi! I submitted my application by the November 1st deadline (not October 1, so I won't hear anything for a few weeks) and wanted to know if you guys think I have a chance at making it to PSP semifinalist.

Male
White/Caucasian
Out of state
Undeclared Engineering
GPA: 4.125 approximately (by GT's weighting system)
Class rank: 1/295
6 AP's taken (Human Geo-5, World History-4, Lit-5, US History-5, Calc BC-5, Calc AB subscore-5, Comp Sci-5) but from what I know AP scores aren't considered for semifinalist selection, 4 this years (Language, Stat, Environmental Sci, Calc AB) Explanation included on application(all true, not bs): I took Calculus BC my junior year and only later became aware that my high school did not offer a higher math course to take my senior year (other than Statistics, which I am currently taking). Therefore, I am in a Calculus BC “class-within-a-class” this year receiving credit for Calculus AB to keep the material, which is not used in Statistics, fresh in my memory until college. I also intended to take AP Spanish but the class was dropped due to budget cuts.
SAT I: 760 M
790 CR
710 W
2260 total
ACT composite: 33 (each section was lower than its SAT counterpart)

EC's:
Lacrosse (4 years): JV Team Leader-Appointed by my coach along with three other sophomores to teach younger players the basics of the game as well as lead drills and exercises.
JV Referee
Varsity Letter
[School Name] Award for Community and Team Service
Box Lacrosse (2 years): Community league not associated with the school
National Honor Society (2 years): Student of Month Award
Adventure Club (1 year)
Recycling Team (1 year)
Teacher’s aide (1 year)

Awards (if not mentioned above):
Wofford Scholar
Furman Scholar
Academic Letter
Academic Bar
School Student of the Month
Head Junior Marshall
AP Scholar with Distinction

Community Service:
Food Pantry
Race for the Cure
Blood Drive
Meals on Wheels
Volunteer at local food festival
Various activities through NHS

For EC’s, awards, and community service, I don’t really remember the format for Georgia Tech’s application so what I listed here is just a guess of what I might have listed there. Some things may not be on the application and there may be some things on the application but not here. If anyone knows or remembers the format of the application, I’d really appreciate it if they posted here so I could make my own post more accurate.

Essay: My essay wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. I wrote about playing lacrosse, which looking back was probably a bad idea since sports essays are kind of cliché, but I didn’t really have much of a choice since it had to be about a class or club (Again, I might be remembering this wrong). I included a lot of imagery and a little bit of humor (not too much though) but I don’t think it had much personality. Here’s a breakdown:
Intro – Lots of imagery, extended metaphor. I talk about not realizing the significance of playing lacrosse until I look back at it.
1st body – How I got involved in the sport, my initial hesitance to join, loving it once I joined, and realizing stepping out of my comfort zone to try new things is good.
2nd body – I talk about my lack of natural ability for lacrosse and the challenges it posed etc. I’m stronger person now. (Original, I know)
3rd body – Meeting people that I probably wouldn’t have in school, forming bonds, learning how to interact with people different than me.
Conclusion – Standard ending, not much to say about it

If you made it this far, thanks for reading the whole thing. I would really appreciate any thoughts or comments and thank you again for your help!

correction: GPA between 4.125 and 4.158. I’m not entirely sure how they calculate it.

First off, I gotta say I love your username. Carl Weathers + Arrested Development for the win! :)

Now I need to give you the bad news: the EA (and consequently PSP) deadline for GaTech is October 1st, not November 1st. Thus, you will be considered for Regular Decision and not PSP, which is a shame b/c you would have had a very good shot at PSP Semifinalist.

Thanks for the response! I tried to squeeze 'Baby," into the name, but cc has a 16 character limit. :frowning:
I know that the EA deadline was October 1st, but I thought you could apply by November 1st and still be considered:
I think there are two “rounds” of selection, one with EA applicants and then a second with everyone in mid-December.

YouGotAStew is correct. Quote from my daughter’s acceptance letter:
“Only students who applied by October 1 and were admitted early to Georgia Tech were chosen as semifinalists during this round of selection.* Additional semifinalists will be chosen in mid-December.”

To put it clearly:

Oct 1 deadline is Early Notification

Nov 1 deadline is Early Action and PSP deadline

What is your GPA unweighted? But you have good test scores and a good curriculum. You have some good EC’s but the Georgia Tech Presidential Program is really looking for substantial leadership positions. I would say you would get picked for the Semi Finalist Round.

^ 4.0 unweighted

majord14: what’s the difference in the Early Notification and Early Action?

Hey everyone, I apologize for I have submitted some incorrect info about deadlines. I was reading outdated info from a summer email I received from the GT Admissions Office, but it has changed that Oct 1 is Early Action and Nov 1 is PSP deadline. Excuse the blunder!!! And, thanks GPBurdell32

Ohh, I understand. Sorry for the mistake in my info, and catch you down at the Big Yellow Joint ;). If you and I go to GT next year, we can have Arrested Development marathons! I’m pretty pumped to be getting Seasons 1-3 on DVD this Christmas.

Yeah!!! We really should lol!

Sounds like a plan! I’ll bring some ice cream sandwiches and my corn ball fryer, but if it gets really crowded we may need a couple Skip Scramblers… On second thought, let’s just get ICE to cater.

I will gobias cups of coffee since we may be up late watching the episodes.

Also @ Corn Baller:

“Everyone’s laughing and riding and cornholing except Buster.”

I die laughing every time I hear that line hahaha…anyway I’ll let this thread get back on track.

Your credentials are very impressive. I hope that if their is a possibility for PSP to consider you, you definately WOULD make it. Apply for the GT honors program nonetheless
