i'm an international student from indonesia

SAT 1 = 780M, 610CR, 620W (i know it's horrible)
SAT 2 = 800M1, 800M2, 770physics

I'm planning to apply to MIT,caltech, stanford, and berkeley (as high reaches)

do i still have a chance or should i lower my standards?

thanks!

For engineering and other math oriented majors- You shouldn’t have a HUGE problem. As long as your other things are in check, yeah you should be somewhat okay.

Impressive math subject test scores! Hardly anyone gets an 800 Math Level 1…

I think if the rest of your application is okay (grades, EC’s, recs, etc.), then you’ll stand as good a shot as anyone with the nice math/physics scores.

I think you’re in the door for any of your choices with these scores.

lol it’s funny what people above me put. There are HUNDREDS of people that try to go for a math related major and STILL have high CR and WR scores. I’m going for engineering and i have a CR of 640, M of 780, Wr of 680, M IIC 800, Physics 710 and i took all the math courses available in my school and got As in all of them. Alg 1, 2, geometry, trig, AP calc AB and BC, AP Stat. of course the other classes were honors classes. does this mean i am in the door for any of those schools? no. there are still those other several hundred students who get over 700 for CR and Wr that i have to beat. oh and if you are an international then your chances are EVEN lower.

i took the time to give you the taste of reality and got the middle 50% SAT scores of the people that got accepted to those schools
Caltech
Cr; 700-780, Wr: 680-770, M:770-800
MIT
Cr: 660-760, Wr: 660-750, M: 720-800
Stanford
Cr: 660-760, Wr: 660-760, M: 680-790

as you know most of the people that go to MIT and Caltech do engineering or business which will also require good math scores. Those people have scores like those. I’m sure they want somebody who isn’t just good at only math.

You should apply to Carnegie Mellon. There scores are about your match and if you take the TOEFL then your low CR scores might be compensated. If you get at least 110, then I guess you wouldn’t have problems applying to your goal schools.

How many people take Math 1? I have a feeling the people that mostly take it are the people that can’t get a good score on Math 2.

BTW - I have 800 CR, 750 W, 780 M, 800 M2, 800 USH, 780 Chem and I don’t expect to get into Caltech. I’m not applying to MIT or Stanford.

“ThisCouldBeHeavan” your scores are great – how come you’re not applying to top schools?

Leoris90 “by in the door” I mean someone has a serioujsshot NOT that it is a slam-dunk. (again, just look at the 50% admissions rates)

your grades and stuff seem good, but you have to keep in mind that there are a LOT of people with similar grades.
so if u want to be a shoe-in for a top school, you need to do something SUPER special.
but after that u get in.

2100hopes
i know u meant that he has a serious shot and i am refuting your statement by saying he does not have a serious shot. What makes people think that engineers don’t have to be good at reading? Who would you rather higher? somebody who can use the computer and write great research papers or somebody who only knows how to deal with computers? just think about what kind of people would actually be accepted by those top schools.

Plus he is international. those top schools have no reason to accept a foreigner when there are people way better than him in the country

I am not saying he doesn’t have a chance at all. however 2100hopes you are just giving him false hope because he obviously doesn’t have a strongshot with his status + grades

@leoris90

Wow, someone’s bitter. Everyone has a serious shot if you fall around the range (50-75 percentile is not the sole range). The Admission Officers make the final decisions. And who assumed that engineers don’t have to be good in reading in the first place? My CR score is 660 and I consider myself a wonderful reader. In fact, I am a better reader than I am a writer and yet my writing score is over a 100 points higher.

SAT CR and W scores below 700 does not make one an incapable reader.

I would much rather “higher” the one who could spell. Jk!! I had to do it! You opened yourself wide open for that one. lol. No hard feelings, friend.

leoris90, it’s not false hope. In fact, a friend (international) of my brother with similar scores got into Penn. Stay optimistic – it will reflect positively in your application for your quest for admission to the school of your choice.

I’m applying to Caltech, Harvard, Princeton, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and UCSD. I’m not applying to other top places because I think it’s a waste of money to apply to 50 different schools.

(I was also considering UChicago, but the essays are too crazy)
