Hi, I'm a HS senior who is looking to get into HYP and MIT.
Background: Asian (Bengali)
Income: low

GPA: 4.4 Class rank: 9
SAT: 2400 Subject test: Biology (800) Mathe Level 2 (710) Chinese with listening (800)
AP: World History (5), English comp (4), English literature (4), Biology (5), American History (5), Goverment (5), Physics B (No physics C in my school) (4), Chinese (5), Calculus BC (5), Economics (5), Physcology (5).

Extra-Curriculas: Key Club, Model Congress, ACE Action, Chess Club (never showed up, and can't even play chess).

My problem is I'm afraid of being turned down, I know they are really what I say "hostile" to Asians at admissions. I'm not into sports, I can't play for I have a heart condition. And not interested in musicical instruments. Can you give me some adivice what other tjings should I do?

Plus, in freshman and Sophmore year, I got B's and C's in some of my classes, which then improved over high school years.

MIT is probably a reach, especially since you had some Bs and Cs. BUT, you have AMAZING test scores, so you could have a chance! Coming from a low income family could also help you, your rank is good (how did you get such a high rank having not perfect grades?! at my school the top 25% have all As). Also I’m not sure if your Math II test score is good enough for MIT.

Being turned down is a part of life. You need to get over that since it’s only a rejection. The main issue with your application is the lack of ECs. Nothing stands out, no leadership roles, etc. Severely lacking for HYPM. The Bs and Cs might hurt a bit, but you do at least have a very rigorous schedule (right?).

I’d say you better include other schools. They aren’t hostile to Asians, but having good grades as an Asian is simply not enough. Your essays and recs do play a role in your admission. I’d make sure your essays are as good as can be (memorable, unique, passionate, etc.), but it is a bit late for anything, isn’t it?

Apply to the schools if you want a shot at them, but they’re all high reaches.

hahaha thanks. I took a bunch of AP courses and they just weighted my gpa. Also the scores had improved over time, school wouldn’t let me reverse the grades.
