I am attempting to transfer from West Virginia University to one of several schools, including UVA. My high school GPA was a mere 3.39 and my SAT score was a 1700.

My college GPA after this year will likely be at least a 3.75 cumulative (4.0 first semester, 3.7? this semester)

Should I even spend the time applying to UVA or do I stand a decent chance of consideration?

Anon115, decent chance is a tricky phrase. If you really want UVA, then of course you should give it a shot. Unfortunately your HS GPA and SAT were quite low for UVA. (According to the school, the avg GPA is 4.2 and average SAT is over 2000.) Was your course load at WV challenging? Make a good case for yourself and good luck.

Ok yea thanks, and I definatley am going to at least try to apply.

I am just really hoping that my college GPA holds some weight behind it since it’s a big improvement from my high school performance.

Sophomore transfers generally give a good amount of weight to high school GPA/SAT. There is less weight on high school for junior transfers, so if you don’t make it this year don’t be afraid to try again next year :)

It may be useful to retake the SAT. UVA requires it depending on how long you have been out of school. They also superscore, meaning they will take your best mark for each section. Bumping up that SAT will really help your chances.

From what I understand, you are trying to transfer for either Spring 2013 or Fall 2013 admissions, correct?

You should retake your SAT/see how you do on the ACT. Your GPA is great, and less weight will be put on your HS performance if you apply for Fall 2013 after three semesters of school.

Hopefully you are involved at WVU and can make a good case for why UVA. Good luck.

I may in fact have to retake the SATs sometime soon then. And unfortunately I am most likely going to be stuck at WVU for the entirety of my sophomore year as I signed a legally binding lease on an apartment for the school year, and its a little late to apply for Fall 2012. I will probably apply to UVA, UNC, and Uconn for Fall of 2013. As far as campus involvement, I am going to join the National Society of Collegiate Scholars after I receive my final grades for this semester.
