My Interview with the alumni went great!! He said that I was bound to be successful and that I really taught him a thing or two about life, and as Oprah said today on the Ellen show, he said that I had the "IT" quality. I told him I wanted to change the world and he said Harvard wants highly motivated individuals like myself. I talked to him about test scores, just to put him at ease, and stated that I believe an individual should not be defined by test scores, and he felt the same. I referred back to an article on the Harvard website written by Mr. Fitzsimmons, and he had stated that Harvard wants students who are both emotionally and academically prepared for college- I AM! I talked to him about my rough childhood, child abuse/etc...long story, still a struggle, and my financial state, only have a mother- who does no work since she has cancer, luckily my EFC is $0!!

Anyone reading this is probably going to state that I have no chance, cause i have low test scores, and frankly to tell u the truth I realized that when I was applying. But i never really did care about the SATS, how can that define a persons true academic capabilities? just because i didn't do very well on it, should not comprehend who I am. I am Me and i do not wish to be perfect. Sad, but true. For the past 4 years, I have put the needs of others, with community service, ahead of my academics, and i have met so many dedicated people who act with kindness, but still no one has done what I have...and that's one thing I am proud of myself for. If i really wished i could have been rank #1, as i was during my freshman year, but truthfully, life is so much more rewarding when u know that u did something for someone else and made there day special and memorable...please take my word for it- I will change the world, and i have gained respect as an individual by showing thing...from teachers i dont even know, the school administration, and students(one specifically wanted to start a riot cause i didn't get into Stanford, and was about to..but i intervened and stated that I felt it was unfair)

After all, wherever we are all meant to go that is where we will go...so keep your hopes up, and remember that its not the end of the world, sure it would be nice, but is it just for the name...Harvard....or for ur own benefit?

The amount of people let into Harvard with under a 1700 SAT score is probably in single digits. You could be one of the lucky few. It's highly unlikely. The fact you even had an interview is good, but it's still highly unlikely you'd get in.

well, you sound like a great person,..but academics are important at Harvard..and in college admissions in general. I would say you have a chance ...but you're a pretty unique applicant, so this is just a guess.

Wow that is so good that u are so motivated and I really admire that. I think that you have a pretty good chance (great ECs and it sounds like u have a great essay). I just want to warn you that reality bites. Despite having such a great interview with an alum, an admissions officer might look @ ur SAT scores and throw automatically reject you. I honestly don't know how the admissions process works, but I really, really, really hope that they don't do that because you actually BELONG at Harvard, whereas there are some other ppl who just want to go there for its "big name." I wish you the best of luck!

You sound so awesome and motivated, I really hope you get in!

thanks:]
u guys are all awesome
it is prob highly unlikely
but it was worth a try, right?
ill keep u guys updated, good luck to all of u guys as well

Remember, Harvard evaluates people based on athletics, ECs, academics, and "personal qualities".

I think you have the last category nailed. In addition, I'm pretty sure that you should be able to get amazing financial aid at hundreds of other great universities.

But your class rank really isn't too hot either.

Personally, I don't think you could handle the rigor of work at Harvard.

don't hold your breath on it.

Her parents come from Afghanistan and their daughter now seeks an education from Harvard. Afghanistan....you remember, that little known place that symbolized repression and tyranny for so many women....the same country that killed women for trying to gain an education? Yeah, I absolutely can see where she hasn't got a chance at all. Nope, no chance at all:)

by the same logic, i should get in just because i'm from new orleans, no?

because, you know, I'm from that little known place that symbolized devastation and government ineptitude...the same city that caused high schoolers to live away from anything resembling home for months and months

No. Weerez think bigger picture. Pnkpearl could offer so much to kids who haven't had much experience beyond the normal day to day well off western lifestyle. Her parents came out of an existence where intellectual freedom was something that could easily lead to death, that their daughter scored higher than national average on her SATs, that she held leadership positions, that she seems to have a lovely caring spirit and a zest to help fashion the world into a better place makes her one of those candidates that top schools salivate over.(And the fact that schools like Harvard look for candidates like Pnkpearl should be one of the reasons that super candidates want to attend Harvard)

"she seems to have a lovely caring spirit and a zest to help fashion the world into a better place makes her one of those candidates that top schools salivate over."

Let's not pretend we can objectively evaluate someone's personality via his/her posts on an Internet forum.

yeah, but do you feel READY academically for harvard? i don't mean to sound like a jerk, but if it's your sob story that gets you in, what's your plan for good grades while there?

yeah i definitely agree that you belong socially (for both yourself and your peers) but are you capable of handling the work? again i'm really sorry if i sound mean, but i'm just playing the devil's advocate.

Fine ChenChen, let's pretend we know what Harvard's going to say and be rude and tell this girl she shouldn't hold her breathe. You guys do know that Harvard says it's looking for certain qualities of character? That not only means it's looking for people who are active and caring but I'd be willing to bet they aren't looking for kids who make themselves feel better by putting others down.

Birk, there is a book called The Gatekeepers that discusses the admissions process that highly selected schools go through... trust me, students with much lower scores, in less historically dire situations that Pnkpearl's are avidly courted just for the reason that these students bring a lot to the educational experience of ALL students. By and large these kids do just fine.

Not with an SAT that brushes against the national average.

people get accepted and people get rejected. its part of life. you applied so just hope for best because anything can happen.

I think, like everyone else, you have a shot. You said your parents are from Afghanistan. I think you would have a stronger case if you have personally visited or lived in Afghanistan. BTW, Afghanian isn't a word. Afghan or Afghani works. I hope you didn't use "Afghanian" in your essays.
