Do I Stand a Chance?

Hey everyone! I am a junior in high school and I just joined because it seems like there are a lot of parents and students with experience in Service Academy applications/admissions on this forum.

I do not know my class rank or GPA, but I would say my weighted GPA is around a 3.8.
I have taken all but two Honors courses and I am taking two APs next year.

My extracurricular are really weak...
4 years of Crew - 3 Varsity letters (1 attained as manager)
1 year of Cross Country - I'm joining next fall so I don't even know if this will count towards anything (I think I can get a V letter)
2 years Environmental Club (it sounds lame but we do a lot of events) - held officer position both years
1 year school paper

SATs (combined 1980)
verbal - 700
math - 560
writing - 720
My math is not so good, but I am taking them again in June along with my first ACTs and I hope to get around a 2100

As far as outside of school I've only really done 3 summers of a Crew camp

I'm already training for the physical fitness exam. I am really passionate about attending West Point and even if I don't stand a chance this year, I plan on doing ROTC at another college and applying again for class of 2015.

Also, a question to clarify the nominations aspect of the admissions process: My dad attended West Point and served in the Army Medical Service Corps. for 26 years. He retired as a colonel. So, I know I can apply for a service related nomination, but should I also apply for the congressional nominations? If I don't get any congressional noms, will the service nom still have me in the running?

Thanks in advance!

Yes! You should apply for the VP nomination too.

Yes.

lein92: You are on the right track. Definitely retake the SATs and try and improve your math score. Taking the ACT is also a great idea.

Every candidate should always apply to every nomination source that is available to them.

Your Test scores must improve. I am a Freshmen at a University this year and I reaplied and didn’t get in. My aplication was strong but I could not get my ACT higher. I am doing well at college but they still took my low ACT as a reason for me not to get an acceptance. I recvieved three noms had 3.8 GPA in HS and I was in many activities. I have a four yr rotc scholarship and have a 3.4 GPA in college. I am telling you, they wont accept you without high test scores.

The nice thing is that they will accept your highest subscores. So, prep this summer for the SAT math portion. You should be able to increase the score enough. Look in the test prep section here on cc and you’ll find info on the xiggi method. There are lots of believers.

Good luck.

yo what r u talking about? your app looks really nice so far…i think you can bump that math score to at least a 600 given that you broke 700 in other sections already.
