This is all I can think of right now. I know my SAT scores will play a major role. However, please give advise on how I can stand out.

A problem with your ECs with respect to standing out is that there isn’t a lot of continuity. With the exception of a few, your ECs make it hard for an admissions officer to say “Oh, he really loves that and has devoted a lot of time into it.”

I tended to have that problem too (my main ECs were Mock Trial president, youth group leader, summer camp counselor, volunteer programs, etc) but I came to realize they all sort of involved working with and bearing responsibility for other people in an organizational manner.

The challenge for you is avoiding making your ECs seem like a laundry list, emphasizing the things that you have put a lot of time into, and writing killer essays.

Perhaps continue Pre-Med club? It would be interesting for an admissions officers to watch you go up the ranks in officer positions, and it’s an interesting academic club.

Also, academically wise, make sure that you’re taking more most rigorous classes that your school offers. (This, however, depends on the type of college you want to apply to. If you aren’t looking into extremely selective schools, you’ll definitely have some leeway.

I was actually going to take three AP classes this year, but there was schedule conflict. Hence, I had to choose b/w AP Chem and AP US Hist.2. Since I am more interested in Chem, I chose AP Chem over Hist. Also, my guidance told me that I should take another course besides Fine Art 2, since that is the only ‘non-AP or Honors’ course I’m taking. However, I really like Art…I plan on applying for the Scholastic COmp.

I understand what you mean w/ the ECs. Bio and Chem League falls under Science League…so that kind of shows continuity…i actually enjoy it…also, I plan on continuing Pre-Med Club…and I show continuity w/ my temple activities…would that count.??

Any considerations?? And, I just found out that the officer of the Pre-Med CLub has refused to be the advisor of the club, so now we’re thinking about asking another teacher whether she would be willing to be the advisor…

My ECs are a bit rocky b/c some clubs were cancelled in my school…so how can I really show continuity.? Would temple stuff count?

For Example:
Grade 9: Pre- Med CLub, FCCLA (got canceled 1 yr later), Bio League
Grade 10: Pre-Med Club (advisor refused to continue 1 yr later), Scarlet Letters (Teacher left), Chem League, French Honors Society
Grade 11: Chem League, French Honors Society

W/ temple however i have been involved since childhood…and now I’m really starting to show leadership…

Thank You!! Please answer to this and the above post.

Success18, Dwight gave you good advice. There isn’t a lot more to say. Take the hardest classes you can. Focus on the few ECs that you have a passion for and try to do something that shows continuity, creativity and initiative within those ECs. Hopefully, by being fully engaged in your life, you’ll have something interesting to say when it’s time to write essays and they will help you stand out.
