Do I still have a chance at Dartmouth?

Thanks for reading this post! (I know it's a bit long).

Honors English 9: B
Honors World History: B+
Honors Biology: B
Honors Geometry: B
CP Spanish 2: A-
Public Speaking: A
PE 9: A

Sophomore Year: 4.25 W

Honors English 10: B
Honors U.S. History: A-
Honors Chemistry: A
Honors Algebra: A
Honors Spanish 3: A

PE 10/Health: A

How are my grades? I had a pretty bad freshman year: the teachers were all unusually hard and I honestly wasn't used to the pace of HS Honors classes or studying for that matter. I'm not trying to make excuses though. Sophomore year I did better, and learned from my mistakes freshman year.

Does the upward trend mean much?

Here's my future schedule:

Junior Year: (this year coming)

Honors English 11
APUSH
AP Biology
Honors Pre-calculus
Honors Spanish 4
Visual Design
AP Art History (self-study)
APES (self-study)
AP U.S. Gov/Politics (self-study)

Senior Year: (predicted)

AP Calculus AB
AP Physics C: Mechanics
AP English
AP Micro
AP Macro (self-study)
AP Psych
AP Euro (self-study)
AP Human Geo (maybe)

I haven't taken any PSATs, SATs, SAT IIs, ACTs, or AP tests, so I know it's still hard to tell. I'm a varsity athlete (and play sports all 4 seasons) and will be captain for track. I'm the founder/editor-in-chief of the literary magazine and the editor-in-chief of the newspaper. I do a bunch of other clubs just for fun/to be social like math team, french club, Habitat for Humanity, etc. I'll have a job throughout the school year as well and have done over 70 hours of community service at the library and track camp.

If I do well junior year (or better than sophomore year), do I still have a chance at top-tier schools and Ivys? Dartmouth is my #1 choice right now.

Any advice?

Take your exams and come back here with those scores. With only grades and ECs, it’s rather difficult to tell. Also, you’ll be a junior this fall, meaning that you have a lot of time until college apps. Study hard for now.

Thanks for the advice. Could anyone address the other questions, like if the upward trend is noticable and helpful, and if my frosh grades are negligible.

Ecs look great. Work on raising your gpa this year because that looks like the lowest aspect of your resume. Take the Sat and 2-3 Sat 2s and/or the Act and then come back and post those scores. For Dartmouth, shoot for at least 2100-2200 on Sat and 700> on Sat 2s. For Act shoot for 33>. The greatest part of your resume is the fact that you have a job year round, play sports year round, have great ecs and leadership positions in those ecs, and also volunteer on top of all of this. Raise your Gpa. Score as high as possible on a standardized test and you should have a pretty solid resume.
P.S. Make sure your gpa is in the top 10% of your class.

Yeah, I’m almost positive I’m in the top 10%. Thanks for the advice!

how many captains does your track team have?

I think the trend is going to make a difference, I was the same as you, with lower grades freshman year, but work hard the rest of the time and colleges will take notice! It’s a lot more interesting than all A’s, don’t you think? You’ve got plenty of time to think about it, I mean, you might not want to go to Dartmouth after all! But I think your in a good standing for the school as of now, so keep going and don’t ever give up hope, if you really want to go there, then try your hardest, and you might end up there after all! :)
