Do I still have a chance at UC Berkeley?

I’m still a junior right now, but I’m worried about my chances at Berkeley or any top UC schools because of last semester.

Freshman year I took Adv. English I, Adv. Alg. II, CP Bio, Chinese I, Environ. Engineering I, Adv. Jazz Band, Health/ICT (semester each) and PE and got a 4.0 both semesters.

Sophomore year I took Adv. English II, Math Analysis/Adv. Trig (semester each), Chem, AP Human Geo, Chinese II, Environ. Engineering II, and PE and got a 4.14 (4.0 UW) both semesters.

This year I’m taking AP Lang, AP Calc AB, AP Physics 1, AP Environmental, US History, Chinese III, and Our Sustainable Future (which is like a dual enrollment engineering class). I got a B in both AP Lang and AP Physics (Lang was an 89%, I was so mad) so I’m really worried about this semester ruining my chances. My GPA was a 4.28 W and 3.71 UW. I’m going to try my hardest to get all As next semester.

Next year I’m taking AP Lit, AP Calc BC, AP Macro, AP Chinese, AP Stats, and either AP Physics 2 or AP Psych.

I’ve only taken the PSAT so far and got a 1330, and I’m taking the SAT next week. I know doing well on the SAT will help my chances a lot.

I’m involved and have leadership positions in clubs as well as over 200 community service hours. I’m ranked 18/583 in my school as of now.

Do I still have a chance at Berkeley? UCLA, UCSD, and UCI would be some of my back up colleges if I can’t get into Berkeley. I’ll appreciate any responses, thank you!

UC’s do not include Freshman grades into their GPA calculation, only 10-11th. Freshman grades are reviewed to make sure you meet the a-g course requirements. So far your GPA looks competitive, so at the end of Junior year you can calculate your UC GPA: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

UCLA and UCB will consider your UW UC GPA, Capped Weighted UC GPA and Fully Weighted UC GPA. You have very good course rigor but you want to aim for a 1450+ SAT score to be competitive. Much will also depend upon intended major, your EC’s and your personal insight questions.

I suggest you look at the UC Freshman profiles for 2017 (not available until Fall 2017) to see how you compare or once decisions are out for this year, look at the decision threads for accepted applicants.

You are definitely on the right track so keep up the good work. As always, UCB and UCLA are tough admits but I would not only apply to UCSD and UCI but also UCSB/UCD/UCSC and/or UCR. Definitely have a safety school or two in mind since UC acceptances are not guaranteed.

Good Luck.
