Do I still have a chance to be competitive for these universities?

Hello,

I’m a sophomore in high-school. Last year, I wasn’t taking school as seriously as I should have, and finished the year with an 83 GPA. I took 1 honors class, so that’s about an 82 unweighted (which I believe is a 2.7.) Fast forward to this year. I’m finishing up the first quarter of my sophomore year and am beginning to worry my freshman year gpa will weigh me down no matter how well I do. The colleges in question I’m interested in attending are Penn State, UConn, University of Washington, Rutgers and FSU. My GPA is usually around the 90-92 area, but even if that was my final GPA for the next 3 years, my cumulative GPA would still be somewhere in the mid to late 80s. Do you think if I do well these 3 remaining years of high-school, that there will be some leniency on freshman year? Or should I begin looking into other universities?

Uhh… bump?

What is your home state? Without test scores, it’s difficult. The main thing to focus on right now is your grades… college happens AFTER you complete high school, so do your best in every class. If by your junior year, your grades don’t look competitive for the schools you listed, then start to expand your list. Keep in mind that PSU has a 2+2 plan, which starts you at a branch campus and allows you to transfer to UP after two years. It’s great for kids who are on the lower end of test score and GPA ranges. You have time, don’t worry too much.
