Do I still have a change of getting into grad school?

So I am currently a sophomore retaking a stats class that I failed last semester. My dad died this semester so if has been really tough on me. Thus far I am doing fine in the class I am retaking, but I am not sure if I am doing well enough to ace the course. If I end up with a B or a C in the retaken course, how bad will it look to grad schools ?

Sorry to hear that man.

Yeah these grad forums can feel like a ghost town sometimes.

Obviously grad school admissions depends on a wealth of factors. I got two or three B-'s during undergrad and still got into my top choice school, probably due to some massive luck, and that the program is an unfunded master’s and the school probably wants money hah.

But seriously, what can you do? I would definitely shoot for that B very hard. Even a B- I think would look a lot better than a C.

But no, it wouldn’t kill your chances. Your overall GPA is an important factor, of course, and this grade will affect it, but you can pull it up with other courses. Sounds like sketchy advice, but if you know of any ‘easy A’ courses, why not take them to improve GPA. I did that with a couple courses - and honestly I wasn’t even planning on grad school until over a year after I graduated - I just wanted an easy workload for senior year.

Again, admission depends on an array of factors. Many schools are big into research and publications, etc (I’m going for a MS in stats, so they didn’t care about research at all). GRE and overall GPA are more important than a single course grade, and letters of rec and your statement of purpose essay are also huge weights.

If you really want to get into grad school, you can get motivated and get there: this C is not a death knell and a B would hardly be a blip at all.

One C in your sophomore year? Don’t sweat it.

Of course, try as hard as you can to bring it up, but if you can’t… it won’t matter. At all.

I took a social psychology class and failed it. I hate retaking things again, so I didn’t really do well the second time and I got a C. This was second semester senior year AND I was applying to social psychology and public health programs (which are influenced by psychology), and I was a psych major. I still got in everywhere I applied.

Good luck, Apple. My best to you. I’m sure you can still do it.

Make sure you chat your professors up during their officer hours so they will remember you and be able to write killer letters of rec.; also do well on the gre. You can get into grad. school.
