Do I still need to try?

So my parents and I had a discussion today and we've basically arrived at the conclusion that unless I get into HYPMS, it's only public college for me.
Which makes me really sad cuz my dreams schools are Rice, Northwestern, and USC.

The thing is the whole time I've been aiming for those standards (7 yr medical program) and so I've taken 4 APS as a soph and I've been aiming for a 4.5+ GPA (5.0 AP scale, 15 APS) and 2350+ so I can become valedictorian. But if I'm only going to be going to UCSD and UCLA, do I still need to try this hard and be miserable?

Why are you (or why would you be) miserable?

I mean you don’t HAVE to do anything
But by continuing doing what you have been doing, you’re developing good study skills, time management, determination, and gaining loads of knowledge.
Say you don’t get into to HYPMS, you’ll just be that much more ahead and prepared for whatever school you do end up in! Also, you’ll probably receive more scholarships

For the sake of your future work ethic, you shouldn’t get into the habit of intentionally slacking. It’ll only hurt you down the road (in college or at your job).

Did you leave Berkeley out intentionally?

try for the scholarships. plus you still have hope of getting into hypms, right?

@halcyonheather my work load right now is making me severely depressed… i don’t feel motivated by anything anymore

@stheart
Hate berkeley… went to the campus and despised everything about it

@clementines2016
Don’t really have hopes of getting into hypms as I don’t really have that special thing to get me in

I don’t see why you would try hard in school solely for college applications, especially when so many colleges are basically all the same anyway. You’re apparently planning to quit trying hard in high school in preparation for attending some college you’ve decided to hate…why would your work ethic suddenly improve at that college? If you stop caring, it will be very hard to start again.

If you’re really doing too much and school is making you insane, then you should probably cut back…but that has nothing to do with whether you get into Harvard or not.

Why? Is it because of money? You could probably get all kinds of scholarships at out-of-state schools in the realm of US News top 50-100 if you’re willing to look at schools that aren’t as brand-namey as HYPSM and Berkeley and UCLA. Are you likely to be a National Merit Finalist?

@halcyonheather
It’s not I’m going to stop completely, but I’ll try to get myself out of this hell cuz I absolutely hate everything right now. I HAVE to go to a brand name school. And yes, I’m expecting to be a national merit finalist

USC will give you a half-tuition scholarship for that if they admit you:

Why? Are you going into investment banking?

It’s basically brand name school or we’re not paying for you

Get other people to talk to them. Obviously your parents don’t understand that there are tons of great schools out there.

Why not keep trying and apply anyways? Whether you can go or not is a completely different story, but until you apply, you have no clue. Who knows, a breakthrough might happen.

Apply to BU’s 7 year med, you have a month left. Its still tough as a honors med program, but it may be slightly easier to get into than Rice or NWU’s 7 year meds (I’m doing BU 7yr med as a Bostonian). Uconn also has a 8 yr med program…fairly respectable at that. They are just a bit cheaper than the schools you list for the 7 year meds.
