Do I take a W or a B/C?

So I just took my first Italian 2 exam and I feel like I did horrendous on it. My professor also seems like she doesn't like me very much and I don't think I can get a good grade in the class this semester. I'm really hoping I can get a 4.0 on my transcript so I can transfer to a top-tier UC. Should I just tough it out and scrape by with a B, or would it be better to drop the class now, and take it another time when I feel more confident with the material. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Depends…would this delay you transferring? Do you already have a 4.0 in many classes or did you just start college?

Thank you for the fast response. No, this would not delay my transferring (I don’t think) and I’m relatively new to college. I’ve completed one semester of 13 units already and I got all A’s.

Do you need to take a foreign language? Is it at all possible for you to take it pass/no pass? You might want to consider that, unless you’re planning to apply to places that don’t like seeing p/np in lieu of a grade.

It depends on what your future plans are. What’s your proposed major? What are your plans post undergrad?

If you plan to go on to grad school/professional school W’s don’t look particularly good. But that being said if it’s only one in something that’s completely irrelevant to your major then it probably won’t be all that significant. Also, one B really is nothing to worry about. You don’t need a perfect 4.0 to get into most majors at the UCs, even Berkeley and UCLA. For the majority of them if you stay above a 3.7 and have decent ECs and write a good personal statement you should be fine.

Wow I was not even aware of the pass/no pass feature. However, I want to save those for my math and science classes as those are my weaker subjects and feel like that really has the potential to weaken my gpa.

Honestly, youre probably not going to maintain the 4.0 anyway, especially if you plan on transferring in 2 years. Youve only completed 13 units and still have to take all of your math and science classes. I would take the B. If you fail the next test then drop the class

I’m just going to tell you, I was looking to save my pass/no pass units for math as well, but I couldn’t take the math class (stats) that way. Look in the catalog for your college to be certain, however!

But yeah, if you’re still not feeling confident about italian after the next test, I’d suggest dropping it. One W in the course of your college experience isn’t the end of the world.

One B won’t kill you. Don’t worry.
