do int. students have to take ESL?

i'm an international student and i'm going to UIUC ECE this fall.

my toefl ibt score was 108. however, my friend who's currently studying at UIUC says that every int. students must take the ESL, regardless of the toefl score that was used for admissions. is this true?

thank you very much

Toefl is enough. You do not even need it if you have SAT critical reading score of 560 or higher. Go here to see requirments for international students that are in addition to those required of US freshman: [U of I Admissions: Additional International Requirements (Freshman and Transfer)](Page Not Found, Illinois Undergraduate Admissions)

my CR score is 610… yep i’ve read that link however, my friend who’s now currently studying in UIUC says that every international students who didn’t attend an international school MUST take the ESL.
now i’m confused lol haha

thanks

You may or may not have to take it for placement (not admission). Go here: [The ESL Placement Test, Center for Teaching Excellence, University of Illinois](<a href=“Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning | University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign”>Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning | University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

If your notice of admission said you need to take the ESL Placement Test, then you do need to take it. If it did not, you don’t but you can choose to take ESL 114-115 if you want to try to avoid taking the freshman rhetoric course.
