Ok, maybe not as much as Athlete/URM/Legacy, but do they make endearing hooks at HYPC?

Also, are International Olympiads in Mathematics/Chemistry/Informatics/Physics valued more than the other ones, Like say, the International Astronomy Olympiad?

They certainly help. However, the kids who make those Olympiads already to have "the goods" (grades, scores, etc.) those schools are seeking. It just adds to the strength of one's application.

The timing of those awards - at least the math and physics - are too late for seniors. So, getting named to the Olympiad Team as a junior is indeed a great hook.

Being in any international olympiad for any subject more or less means you are one of the top 5ish (I'm not sure how many go for each event) high school students in that subject in the entire nation. Not quite because not everyone takes teh required tests to be on the team, but still, if you're on the team thats pretty damn good. In my opinion, one of the most impressive if not the most impressive things you can do in HS. Honestly, I'd be very surprised to see even 1 in 10 of these students rejected from their top chioce, especially considering, as CountingDown mentioned, that these students will also have amazing grades, ECs, and test scoresl.
Maybe I'm exaggerating the significance a little bit, but it still is undeniably pretty damn amazing.

i'd say they're better hooks than URM or legacy for sure. anyone who gets on the international team is the best in the nation, after all. even being a finalist is a great hook.

Thanks guys. But I'm doubtful about how one should mention it in one's application.

In the app of XYZ school there was VERY little space to mention such achievements and hence I had to shorten it to : International PQR Olympiad - I qualified the National level in 20XX.

Is this fine? There wasn't enough space to write even a character more.

Wll this get the correct message across to the adcoms?

i think usuually apps give places for honors and awards. put that first. if theres no space for it, definitely make you put it somewhere where it will be noticeable.

maybe recruit >> olympiad in admissions, but in the real world, lets face it, being intelligent enough to make it to an internatinal olympiad definitlely trumps being good at a sport

I know a guy who was awarded a silver medal at IChO and was rejected from Princeton. I don't know whether he applied anywhere else abroad or not, but he now goes to university in Romania.

unfortunately, at top colleges it seems that all applicants have something comparable to International or national olympiads in terms of achievement level, so its hard for colleges to accept every qualifier that applies.

gouchicago,
I recall there was really no place for awards, etc. on the Uncommon App. DS sent in an activities/honors resume that included all that stuff and uploaded it as a supp document with the app.
