Do Interviews Hold Any Weight In The Application Process?

I got an email from Northwestern saying that registration for interviews is now available. I've heard that the interview can help you in the admissions process, but is more of a Q&A with an alumnus.

If anyone who has experience with an interview, feedback would be appreciated!

Only to indicate degree of interest that may otherwise be accomplished by visiting campus or something along those lines.

I did not interview.

My D was admitted without an interview. This was the response she got when there was not an interview available:

“Rest assured that an interview is not required for your application and does not play an important role in the application process. We use interviews to gauge how interested an applicant is in attending NU. Since you are applying Early Decision, your application already reflects the high level of motivation we’d be looking for!”

This is all a bit misleading. I am an alumni interviewer- for the vast majority of applicants, the interview will be meaningless. Only those who are truly exceptional in their interview, and whose interviewer is capable of expressing exactly why and how that was the case, will benefit directly from interviewing, but those people will get a small benefit.

Likewise to those who are an exceptionally poor interview, but this would be exceedingly rare, and again, extremely minor, and could be completely ignored based on letters of rec.

Demonstrating interest is true to some extent. Turning down an offered interview without a good reason would be a negative, certainly.

I’d also view your interview as a chance to ask questions. You might learn about the best secret place on campus to study, the best hidden cafe in Evanston, the best dorm room, how to hear student feedback on professors or some other juicy tidbit!

Just a warning - at least for ED the interview slots fill quickly, so I’d jump at the opportunity to schedule an interview quickly, before all of your local time slots fill.

i registered for the interview system…but it won’t let me actually schedule an interview. this is all it says under “sign up for interviews”:
"We are pleased to offer you an opportunity to interview with an Alumni Admission Council (AAC) member who lives in your area. An interview is an excellent way to get your questions answered, as well as to provide the University with greater insight about yourself that may enhance information provided in your application for admission.

If you are interested in scheduling an interview, please check back shortly as we update the information every week."

But there are no dates to choose from. does anyone know if i’m doing something wrong??

I’m sorry to hijack this thread but I have a quick question. I have an alumni interview soon and the interviewer asked how she would know its me? It’s at a local CA Starbucks. Should I just describe myself or should I say ill bring some identifying northwestern gear lol?

Sent from my PC36100 using CC App

@Rueplumet: I have the same problem. I’m assuming (hoping) that this means that there simply aren’t any AAC members in my area. If anyone else knows something more, however, I am curious, too.

how long ago did you register on the site? im thinking maybe i should have tried to sign up when they first sent me the email, two weeks ago :/

I registered a while ago- probably at least a month. I think I’ve checked fairly regularly, and there have never been any available interviews.
