Im thinking of flying down and doing an on campus interview. I think I read somewhere where it said that Rice encourages these interviews, but does this actually help you for admissions or is it just an extra touch?

If you are flying to Rice “just” to do an interview, then don’t. But if you are wanting to visit Rice to determine if it is the right school for you, then yes, feel free to take advantage of the opportunity. An interview will not make or break an applicant’s chances of admission.

I’m currently a Rice student. I can tell you that I did not do an interview. In fact, the only contact I had with Rice before being accepted was 1 campus tour, the information guides sent in the mail, a conversation with a Rice student and a conversation at Lowe’s with a Rice alumna.

Many of my friends here also did not do interviews. But I still highly recommend you show and maintain an interest in the university. And definitely visit the campus. I’ve also heard from some friends that they sat in on some classes on their tours and it really influenced their choice. So try to do that also.
