Do leadership positions in many clubs matter?

I was looking through the "What are my Chances?" forum, and I noticed many people had leadership positions in 6+ clubs. Does this look outstanding on a college resume? I couldn't even imagine how I would have the time to be the President of 6 clubs (along with other ECs, Academics, etc.)...

I plan on having major leadership positions in only 3 clubs (being very active in them). Should I go for more?

thanks.

if you are a very active leader in those 3 clubs and have a lot of passion then don't worry. if you just say you are the leader, then wow that is good, but remember, if you are applying to a top-tier ivy school, that is not that impressive. tons of kids have similar stats. so show your best passion as possible.

P.S. refer to DoveOfPeace's thread on ECs I learned a lot from there.

3 is MORE than enough! Adcoms aren't dumb. When they see someone list leadership in 6 clubs they immediately suspect that each club involved very little actual duties. This does not impress them.

Stanford, for example, says right in its FAQ "We do not favor one type of activity over another; nor is it necessary to participate in a large number of activities. An exceptional experience in one or two activities demonstrates your passion more than minimal participation in five or six clubs."
