I'm thinking about double majoring in math and econ.

yes, of course. lsp isn’t an intensive 4 year program, it’s a handful of gen ed courses that can be finished in 1-2 years leaving ample time for a single or double major. math/econ is such a common combo that I believe the econ dept has a joint math/economics program which you can talk to them about.

Well, I don’t go there yet, so take my advice with a grain of salt. But from one future math major to another:

Check the NYU admissions board. They have a list of majors that they do not consider for LSP because, according to the board, those majors cannot be completed “on time.” (Whatever “on time” means.) Math is one of those majors. Thing is, LSP is a lot of gen ed courses and most of them aren’t that applicable to the math major. I am guessing that you did not indicate a major when you applied?

As Alix said, you can do one joint major in “mathematics and economics.” Or you can double major in mathematics and economics. The latter has more course requirements.

Just my two cents. Good luck! :)

Here’s the board message: [AP Credit - Topic Powered by Social Strata](http://nyu.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/1194015161/m/713106771)

Crap! I put math as my intended major (as I thought NYU does not admit by major).
And now I just ****ed up my chances…■■■

Listen to me: that list is complete BS. CAS and LSP Advising are both useless and rarely know what they’re talking about in my experience. They specifically told me I couldn’t major in Neural Science or Biochemistry (the 2 majors I was considering). I ended up double majoring in Chemistry AND Neural Science after doing LSP. And Neural Sci is one of the more intense majors at NYU, it has a ton of requirements - Math and Econ both have less. You can definitely do the joint Math and Econ program, but plan it out really well in advance.

And NYU doesn’t admit by major; you have to declare it once you get here (I had to fill out a form).

NYU students typically do 8 classes a year x 4 years = 32 classes total. LSP accounts for 10 gen ed courses, that leaves you with 22. Foreign language will take away 4, that leaves you with 18. The joint Math and Econ program has fewer than 18 required classes, so it leaves you with enough room plus electives.

But I’m just wondering; since I listed math as my anticipated major, am I not considered for LSP if I don’t make into CAS?

Don’t worry, you’ll still be considered for LSP.

Wait… everyone gets considered for LSP? I thought it was a process of getting rejected from your choice school and then being considered for LSP only if they think you’re a match for that program.

Oh okay, yeah I have no personal experience with LSP, just figured I’d show you the admissions board. I guess it all comes down to how you plan it. It probably is more difficult (in terms of scheduling, etc.) to major in math and econ after LSP, but as Alix said, it’s doable.

it takes them two years to complete the lsp courses.

yeah i’m sure you’ll still get considered - my roommate applied as a Comp Sci major and was placed into LS. Don’t stress about it now - sounds like you’ve yet to hear from NYU and are already planning out what to do if you end up in LS.

And to clarify, it doesn’t take 2 years to complete lsp courses…the requirements can easily be done in 3 semesters, and I finished them in 2…don’t bother taking the extra classes you don’t have to.

I applied as a biochemistry major…am I still going to be considered?

The admission officer told me that I will NOT be considered for the LSP through email…I put biochemistry as my anticipated major. I totally ruined my life.
