Do many prep schools use some type of online platform for assignments?

I know @GoatMama . I was not singling you out

It’s so weird to me how you can actually track everything online. I’m actually way more interested in the teacher comments than the grades. My kids find this funny. But it gives you insight into who they really are and if things are consistent across the board.

A work colleague has kids at one of the high-pressure, high performing public high schools that is known for having suicides and suicide attempts among the students. She mentioned research indicating that the more access parents have to info via online platforms, the higher the level of anxiety among kids.

@CaliMex — I can totally believe that.

There is a charter school down here with a camera so parents can watch the kids all day and see, as well as listen to, the classes :-t …can you imagine? I can only imaging what I would do - Lord help my kid if that ever happened! [-O<

LOL. Apparently there was a big dust-up in Darien, CT recently when parents were told they could no longer come to school and eat lunch with their kids. Elementary school, but still…(and I may not have the facts exactly right but it was ridiculous). I can believe it that the visibility causes greater student anxiety.

@Golfgr8 Shhhh. I can think of a few people who will ask you for the name. 8-}

Starting this year we moved our 7th grader out of the private school he always attended and into a public school (we and he were both very unhappy with the private school). Now, for the first time EVER I can see every single grade he’s received this year. As grades come in, it adjusts the overall grade he has in each class. I’m still undecided how I feel about having that much access - to be honest I feel at times it is a bit stressful to know EVERYTHING and how it’s impacted his GPA. This is in stark contrast to his previous private school where we would just get quarterly grades with detailed notes. I usually had no idea where my kids’ grades stood unless I got one of those unpleasant emails from a teacher that no one wants :slight_smile:

His new public school uses Google classroom, and as far as I can tell the teachers are all very consistent in posting daily homework assignments, as well as long term due dates. I do like this set up because at our previous private school, every teacher did something different. Some used google classroom, others had their own online system, some had you take a photo of the whiteboard with their iPad, etc, etc. It was very confusing and there were times that assignments were missed.

Mercersburg has an online system, but I don’t know what it is and have no access to it. I wait until the advisor and faculty report cards and notes are sent to us. As far as I can tell, most assignments are posted with good consistency from professors at his school.

@mairlodi this is one of the great things about boarding school… the kids learn to take full responsibility for all their STUFF (all encompassing stuff) before the get to college and no one around them cares how they’re faring. My extremely disorganized son required a LOT of propping up in middle school, and at BS he learned how to organize himself and how to keep track of everything - under the watchful eye of the learning center, who did ZERO propping up but did some VERY important and helpful coaching. Without the parents hovering, the kids really learn to do for themselves. Now, he’s doing well on his own at college, thanks to the skills he learned at BS.

@Golfgr8 I ever refused to have the nanny cam in the crib when the kids were little. I thought it was an invasion of privacy. Still do. So I guess I would have a huge issue with cameras in the classroom. It’s just creepy. Though I do like that ring doorbell ( my spouse bought two which were never installed).
